The Walking Dead series finale left fans in a state of shock with the coda scene, how well the episode was presented, and the deaths of some fan-favorite characters. In a final season, all bets are off for most characters as they could die before the story concludes. TWD fans knew Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Maggie (Lauren Cohan), Daryl (Norman Reedus), and Carol (Melissa McBride) were safe due to spinoffs and other conversations. But there were still several beloved characters whose fates were uncertain.

The Walking Dead series finale title, “Rest in Peace,” made fans uneasy as they waited to see who would be killed. In the penultimate episode, Jerry’s (Cooper Andrews) and Elijah’s (Okea Eme-Akwari) storylines appeared to set them up for death, but both of these characters reappeared and made it to the end.

Others weren’t so lucky.

Luke (Dan Fogler) and Jules (Alex Sgambati)  are two characters fans were concerned about. When they reappeared late in the season, fans were happy to see them together even though they delivered the news that the Commonwealth had taken over Oceanside and weren’t sure of the residents’ fates there. They teamed up with Aaron (Ross Marquand), Lydia (Cassady McClincy), Jerry, and Elijah).

In the penultimate episode, “Family,” Luke and Jules were trapped at the Commonwealth with many of our other survivors as a variant horde of walkers bore down on them. Jules was overcome and devoured by walkers, while Luke was bit on the ankle. Despite the best efforts to save him, Luke succumbed to the bite.

It was a terribly emotional scene as he had his original group at his side. Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura), Magna (Nadia Hilker), Connie (Lauren Ridloff), and Kelly (Angel Theory) were distraught at losing their friend. They stayed with him until the end, and Magna was the one who put him down so he wouldn’t reanimate.

Another final death scene was that of an undead Lance Hornsby (Josh Hamilton), complete with Carol’s arrow still protruding from his neck. Before Pamela (Laila Robins) could pull a Carol comic moment and sacrifice herself to the undead, Maggie shot Hornsby’s walker in the head.

The finale wouldn’t be impactful if there weren’t another significant death, and this one hurt. Rosita (Christan Serratos) was introduced in season 5 with Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) and Eugene (Josh McDermitt), and many fans weren’t much of a fan at the beginning. But over time, Rosita has become a warrior who has served a significant role in the story.

During the finale, her mama bear instincts kicked in, and she made for a powerful showing up until her end. She did what needed to be done to ensure her child, Coco, was safely situated before she made it known that she had been bitten. Her death was such an emotional storyline to watch as she said her goodbyes and enjoyed her final moments with her daughter.

At the end of the episode, during the 1-year time jump, a memorial was set up honoring Rosita, Luke, and Jules, but another mysterious name was also present. That of Marissa Berot. She must have been a Commonwealth resident killed by the walkers at some point in the episode.

It was an emotional episode worthy of a series finale, and most fans were delighted with an ending they weren’t prepared for.
