The Walking Dead series is based on a comic book story created by Robert Kirman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard. The series, which ended after 12 years in November 2022, often took liberties by straying from the source material, but Kirkman has always kept his creative foot in the door throughout. With the series ending, it has been fun to look back and remember how great this series has been. Take a peek at an old video where Kirkman takes fans behind the scenes on the prison set from season 3.

Kirkman praised the team who put the prison set together for making it everything he hoped it would be. He walks fans around the set, showing them how the crew made things appear old with paint techniques and using trash to give the set a real apocalyptic feel. The grounds look like a prison riot had occurred, which it probably did soon after the outbreak.

He also shared that it is unreal to stand in the prison, of which Adlard sent him drawings for the comic seven or eight years before making these scenes in the series.

The Walking Dead season 3

Fans of the series agree that seasons 1-3 are possibly the best, and the prison storyline was one of the best. Kirkman was in awe of how well the crew took what he and Adlard created and brought it to life for this segment of the series.

As he tours the set, he shows off some fantastic creations, including the scuzzy mattresses and a disgusting-looking toilet that he believes isn’t covered in urine and feces but rather wax or something like that.

As this video was taken prior to the filming of season 3, Kirkman promises fans that season 3 will blow them away. He tells comic fans they know what’s coming and that this is the season whose events make The Walking Dead the “most memorable, exciting, gut-wrenching, terrifying moments of the comic book.”
