The Walking Dead series aired its last episode three weeks ago, and it still doesn’t seem real. Although satisfying, the conclusion of this series didn’t seem like the end due to the announcement of several direct spinoffs that will be released in 2023. One storyline in the last chapter of the series that saw closure was that of Rosita Espinosa (Christian Serratos) in that heartbreaking death scene.

Cinematography Duane Charles Manwiller is always generous with the behind-the-scenes photos he shares on Instagram. He has revealed several images of the alternate ending that would show older versions of RJ (Roland Buck III), Ezra (Seoum Tylor Aun), Coco (Sahara Ale), Gracie (Tess Cline), and Judith (Britt Baron). This was an ending filmed but replaced by Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira), which was the ending fans needed to see.

Recently Manwiller would pull at our heartstrings with a new Walking Dead BTS image of Rosita’s death scene. The photo shows series finale director Greg Nicotero, Serratos, Seth Gilliam (Gabriel), Josh McDermitt (Eugene), and a stand-in for baby Coco at Rosita’s bedside.

Serratos asked to be killed in the finale as she needed closure of this character she would never see again.

How did Rosita die in The Walking Dead?

Fans of The Walking Dead expected some significant deaths in the last episode. Viewers expect death for a series finale, and the title, “Rest in Peace,” seemed a bad omen. Luke (Dan Fogler), Jules (Alex Sgambati), and Lance Hornsby’s (Josh Hamilton) walker all died in the finale. But Rosita, a character introduced in season 4, was the death that hit the hardest.

Throughout her story in the series, Rosita experienced a drastic evolution from being nearly ornamental to becoming a badass warrior with effective leadership skills. She is one character who many viewers didn’t care about until later seasons when she emerged into quite a different character.

She encounters much loss throughout the series, but her daughter Coco is a bright light in a dark world. Little Coco will carry on Rosita’s legacy, as was seen in the alternate scene as she has grown up and is still among the living several years later with the children she grew up with.

She died while trying to protect her daughter and falls into a horde of walkers. She breaks away from the horde but eventually reveals to Eugene that she was bitten on the shoulder, an area where amputation, as viewers have seen in the past, wasn’t an option.
