Walking Dead behind the scenes of Rick and Michonne’s final scenes
By Renee Hansen
Fans of The Walking Dead were pleased that the series ended with a scene featuring Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln and Michonne (Danai Gurira). This scene reveals what these two characters have been up to during their absence from the series. The Walking Dead shared a peek behind the scenes at making their final scene of the main series.
Towards the end of the last episode of the series, after Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) takes his final ride away from the Commonwealth, it fades to black, and a new scene begins with a match being lit. Then Rick’s face appeared on screen, followed by Michonne’s, and the fans went wild.
Initially, the scene was a bit confusing, as it almost seemed the pair could be together. But it would be quickly cleared up when viewers saw both Michonne and Rick had his boots and the etched cell phone. Rick’s timeline was sometime before Michonne found his possessions at Bloodworth Island on the same boat he threw them on.

The BTS video (below) shows clips of Lincoln, Gurira, finale episode director Greg Nicotero and others who discuss the making of these scenes. Lincoln shared that he realized just how much he missed filming for The Walking Dead. Gurira said in some ways; it felt like they never left.
The scene where Rick kills the walker on the riverside wasn’t scripted. Lincoln shared that he couldn’t have traveled all that way (from the UK to Georgia) and not killed something. Plus, he stated that Gurira was kicking ass on horseback; he had to do something amazing as well. It was very fitting to have Rick be the character who killed the first and last walker of the series.
Gurira gave a shout-out to Eulyn Hufkie for her new wardrobe. Hufkie served as the costume designer for the series for the first six seasons, returned for Michonne’s final scene, and will be the costume designer for the Rick and Michonne spinoff.
Although the scenes were quick on screen, it took a lot of time to create the final product. The video below shows some great shots of filming and more.
