Fear the Walking Dead actress Danay Garcia has portrayed Luciana since season 2 of the series. Garcia will return for season 8 and recently posted a fun behind-the-scenes video of her and Colman Domingo, who plays Strand, preparing for filming. As with many of our TWDU cast members, Garcia has a giving heart. One group she is a mentor for is Spotlight Dorado, for which she recently attended the Spotlight Dorado Finalist celebration.

McDonald’s Spotlight Dorado aims at empowering and amplifying Latino voices across different industries. The main focus is film, for which the Latino community only makes up 1% of the stories told in Hollywood. The organization’s goal is to provide Latino filmmakers and screenwriters the platform, financing, and other essential tools to distribute the stories they have to tell.

Garcia serves as a mentor or this program along with actress Stephanie Beatriz (Encanto),  director Carlos López Estrada (Raya and the last Dragon), Ilana Peña, showrunner of Diary of a Future President, and writer/director Nancy C. Mejía (The L Word Generation Q.)

Danay Garcia shared her excitement for the first-time event and the winner and finalists on Instagram.

The 2022 McDonald’s Spotlight Dorado short film contest winner is Jesus Celaya for his film Lucha Noir (you can view the trailer below). Two other finalists were in the running for the grand prize, Jazmin Aguilar’s Kid Ugly and Lorena Russi’s A History of Sitting in Waiting Rooms (Or Whatever Longer Title You Prefer).

The process for the program kicked off in April 2022 with an open call for Latino writers, directors, and producers. By August, there were hundreds of submissions, with Celaya, Aguilar, and Russi selected as finalists. In November, the three contestants submitted their shorts and were voted on by fans nationwide. This led to Celaya being chosen as the grand prize winner in December.
