The Walking Dead universe has several spinoffs in the works in addition to the already-released series. Fear the Walking Dead premiered its eighth and final season in 2023 and was the first spinoff, followed by the limited series The Walking Dead: World Beyond and the anthology series Tales of the Walking Dead. By the end of 2023, there will be a total of seven spinoffs in TWDU.

Fear the Walking Dead was the first spinoff series. Although not a direct spinoff, it is set in the same world as the main series. This story began at the onset of the outbreak and followed the survivors as they tried to wrap their heads around what was taking place. Fear TWD started in Los Angeles and eventually moved to Mexico and Texas. The eighth season will see another location as filming moved to Savannah, Georgia.

Fear the Walking Dead’s final season will be released in two six-episode parts beginning May 14 on AMC, with the second coming later in 2023.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond was the second spinoff of the universe that was ordered as a limited two-season series. This is a coming-of-age series that begins in the midwest. World Beyond follows a group of teens sheltered by their community’s walls since the beginning of the outbreak. When they head beyond the borders, they must learn how to survive in a world full of the undead. This series sheds much light on the mysterious CRM (Civic Republic Military) featured in the other series.

World Beyond also reintroduces a familiar face from the flagship series. Warrant Officer Jadis Stokes (Pollyanna McIntosh) traded Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) as her ticket of admittance into the organization, where she quickly climbed their ranks. Jadis will play a role in the upcoming Rick & Michonne spinoff series.

The Walking Dead spinoffs

Tales of the Walking Dead is a unique series in the universe, an anthology series with standalone stories featuring new characters. This series featured a diverse set of storylines from supernatural, reality-bending, 30 years into the future, and an origin story of a TWD character, Alpha (Samantha Morton), during a time when she was known as Dee.

The Walking Dead: Dead City will be the first direct spinoff of the flagship. Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) will be partnered in a mission to Manhattan. They will meet new people and come against a walker horde one million strong. Dead City will premiere on AMC on June 18 at 9 p.m. ET and three days early on Thursday, June 15, on AMC+.

Dead City will likely see more seasons, according to Cohan, who hopes the series will continue into a fifth season.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon will see Norman Reedus reprise his role as Daryl when he ends up in France. There has been no announcement on how he arrives at this destination, but Reedus says that Daryl does go unwillingly. This series began filming in France in the fall of 2022 and will release in the fall of 2023. Daryl Dixon is rumored to have started filming on a second season, but AMC has yet to confirm that the series has been renewed.

The Walking Dead: Rick and Michonne will see the titular characters return to the universe to continue their epic love story. Filming for this series wrapped in May 2023, with an expected release date in 2024.

More Tales of the Walking Dead is a newly announced short-form series that will see The Walking Dead Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple as showrunner. The series will have six episodes and is likely a limited series.
