Actress and playwright Danai Gurira portrayed Michonne Hawthorne in The Walking Dead series from season 3 until her departure in season 10. Gurira left the series, ready to pursue new projects, and has been very busy with those. In the summer of 2022, it was announced at San Diego Comic-Con that Michonne and Rick would return for a spinoff series. In an interview with Deadline, Gurira reveals the projected release date for the spinoff.

The Walking Dead storyline shows that she set out to look for her husband, Rick (Andrew Lincoln), who she believed had died. When she finds evidence to the contrary, she knows she must find him. This was how she departed the series; fans have longed to know what has transpired since that time.

Reports have circulated that the Rick and Michonne series will begin filming in Atlanta on January 6, 2023. Gurira has commented that the series will debut after The Walking Dead: Dead City and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, which could be sometime after Halloween 2023.

UPDATE: filming for Summit, the working title for Rick and Mchonne’s series, will begin filming in February 2023, beginning in Atlanta, Georgia, then moving to New Jersey. The release date for this series has been moved to 2024.

Danai Gurira – what’s next?

During the Deadline interview, Gurira shared that she was in New York setting up pre-production for a project for that she will serve as an executive producer. The interviewee would then confirm she is talking about the spinoff series.

Of course, she couldn’t share much about the spinoff but was able to say fans will be in for some surprises as far as the storyline goes. She reinforces other comments by Scott M. Gimple and others that this is an epic love story. This story is rooted in The Walking Dead world but will include another world that isn’t known about yet, which will hold many surprises.

Fans are anxious to see what will be revealed in this spinoff series. Many are curious about what has occurred while the two characters have been apart and, of course, long to see the reunion between this powerhouse couple.
