The Walking Dead: Dead City was thought to be the first release in 2023 for The Walking Dead universe. But when AMC Networks released its spring lineup, it was announced that not only would Fear the Walking Dead season 8 premiere in May, ahead of Dead City, this would be the final season of the first spinoff series in TWDU.

Dead City seems to be at the center of change, first with the title from Isle of the Dead to Dead City, and now with the premiere date from April to June 2023. This has saddened many fans anxious to see what takes Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) to Manhattan.

This highly anticipated series will see more stories involving Maggie Rhee, who, in the final season of the flagship series, was on a mission of revenge against the Reapers, who killed people in her community, and Negan, who killed her husband.

Negan did his best to redeem himself in the final season, and although many have been able to see he truly is a changed man, Maggie cannot forgive him. This is why it seems so unlikely that his duo would travel anywhere together.

Fear the Walking Dead will premiere on May 14 with six episodes for the first half of the season, but no specific date in June has been announced for Dead City. With Fear TWD part 1 consisting of six episodes, this likely will put the Dead City date to June 25 unless they overlap the seasons and run episodes of both series on the same night. This wouldn’t be unheard of, as AMC did this with Fear TWD and World Beyond.

Regardless of the debut, Dead City is the spinoff series that will continue Maggie and Negan’s story, of which fans are excited to learn more. The world of an apocalyptic Manhattan is an intriguing storyline for TWDU, and it will be interesting to learn whether or not Maggie and Negan can become allies on this new mission.

The official synopsis from AMC Networks for The Walking Dead: Dead City

"The Walking Dead: Dead City envisions the popular Maggie and Negan characters traveling into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan long ago cut off from the mainland.  The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror."
