What’s next for The Walking Dead franchise?
By Renee Hansen
The Walking Dead series concluded in November 2022 after airing for 12 years. Although set in an apocalypse, this series is much more than your average zombie series. The Walking Dead paved the path for more titles in the genre because it focuses on the survivors and their experiences. The flagship may be over, but the franchise is only beginning. The stories will continue via several spinoffs, with more to come.
On May 14, 2023, Fear the Walking Dead, the first spinoff series, will premiere its eighth and final season. This series began airing in 2015, and though it’s set in the same world, it didn’t have a direct connection to the main series. That is until season 4 when the first character, Morgan Jones (Lennie James), crossed from The Walking Dead to Fear TWD. Dwight (Amelio Austin) and his wife Sherry (Christine Evangelista) would also crossover in season 5, giving the spinoff direct ties to the flagship. The final season will be released in two parts, with the second experiencing a seven-year jump.
The next series to be released in The Walking Dead franchise will be The Walking Dead: Dead City on June 18, 2023. This series will move from the woods to the city as Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) embark on a journey to Manhattan. The unlikely duo team up to rescue Maggie’s son Hershel (Logan Kim). Dead City will begin two years after the conclusion of the main series.
The Walking Dead spinoffs
In the second half of 2023, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon will premiere. This spinoff will see Daryl (Norman Reedus) mysteriously wind up in France. He will encounter new people and the dreaded variant walkers. As he tries to make his way home again, his mission will be complicated by the connections he forms there.
The Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) series, Summit (working title), has been pushed to a 2024 release date. Little is known about this series, but it has been described as an epic love story. Fans are excited to see the return of these two characters to the franchise.
Other spinoffs include the limited series The Walking Dead: World Beyond and the anthology series Tales of the Walking Dead.
