Does Eugene Porter die in The Walking Dead?
By Renee Hansen
Actor Josh McDermitt portrayed Dr. Eugene Porter on The Walking Dead beginning in season 4. He was introduced with his traveling companions Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz) and Rosita Espinosa (Christian Serratos). Although his story began with deception, he would eventually find his courage and love as well.
Eugene was one of the many characters to survive the series’ conclusion. With several spinoffs in the works, perhaps fans will see him once again. During the final episode time-jump, he was seen still in a relationship with Max (Margot Bingham), and the pair had a daughter they named Rosie after Rosita, who sadly died in the last episode.
Throughout his time in the series, his personality remained the same. He was always eccentric and brilliant and never lost his unique speaking style. This character was someone who did what he knew would ensure his survival, including lying about being a scientist who had the key to a cure for the virus that brought the dead back to life.
The Walking Dead – Eugene Porter
The residents of Alexandria didn’t always appreciate Eugene’s intellect, but one unlikely person, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), saw him for what he was worth. Negan would enlist Eugene into his group, the Savors, where he thrived. He would eventually see Negan’s evil and was instrumental in the takedown of the Saviors when he rigged the ammunition in season 8.
Many blame Eugene for the fall of the communities to the Commonwealth as he was the one who first made contact with this group and would reveal the location of Alexandria. He did this, believing the lies the Commonwealth leaders told him.
In the series’ final episodes, Eugene would stand trial for the murder of the governor’s son Sebastian (Teo Rapp-Olsson). During the trial, he gave a speech that spoke to Mercer (Michael James Shaw), which spawned the Commonwealth general to see that he could make a difference.
Love him or hate him, McDermitt did a fantastic job in his portrayal of Eugene Porter in The Walking Dead series.
