David Morrissey awarded honorary degree from Liverpool Hope University

English actor and filmmaker David Morrissey is known for his role as the Governor in The Walking Dead. He recently received an honorary degree from Liverpool Hope University. iTV reports that Morrissey was awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters in honor of his acting career and his work for social justice charities.

Morrissey stated that he was flabbergasted at the honor received from the university located in a city that has played a big part in his life. He would remember back to his early days stating he wasn’t an academic, but when he was on stage, he felt like he had arrived.

He enjoyed portraying the Governor as this marked a drastic lifestyle and character change for the actor. He stated that the Governor was complex and crazy.

"I loved playing him, he was so complex and so crazy – you never knew where you were with him.Characters can be all things – I like to find the complexity in people."

What else does David Morrissey star in?

Morrissey has been called “one of the most versatile English actors of his generation” by the British Film Institute. This is evident in the roles he has played throughout his career.

At the age of 18, he secured his first role in a TV series, One Summer. He would then attend the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts before spending four years at the  Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre.

He is known for his numerous roles, including recent ones in The Long Shadow, Dampyr, Sherwood, Radioman, The Colour Room, and Britannia. His feature-length directorial debut was  Don’t Worry About Me, which premiered at the London Film Festival in 2009 and aired on BBC in 2010.

Next, Morrissey will star in a sci-fi movie, Slingshot, directed by Mikael Håfström, known for Bloodline. The story follows an astronaut bound for Saturn’s moon, Titan, who struggles with reality on a mission that may have been compromised. The movie also stars Emily Beecham, Casey Affleck, and Laurence Fishburne.
