On Feb. 8, 2015, AMC aired the midseason premiere of season 5 of The Walking Dead. This episode was the ninth of the season and marked the final appearance of Tyreese, portrayed by Chad L. Coleman. Titled “What’s Happened and What’s Going On,” the episode took fans on an emotional roller coaster of a story.

Written by TWD Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple and directed by Greg Nicotero, this episode takes place only 17 days after Beth’s (Emily Kinney) death, which occurred only one episode prior. This was the first midseason episode to feature a main character’s death and the third time two main characters were killed off in consecutive episodes.

Another piece of trivia about this episode is that Andrew Lincoln, who portrays Rick Grimes in TWDU, voices the radio broadcaster in this episode. This also marks the first episode set outside of Georgia as it takes place in Richmond, Virginia.

The main event in this episode was the heartwrenching death of the gentle giant, Tyreese. It was an exciting storyline as Tyreese, after a walker bites him, hallucinates several characters who had influenced his life and died previously. Beth, Bob (Lawrence Gilliard Jr.), Lizzie (Brighton Sharbino), and Mika (Kyla Kenedy) try to console him while the Governor (David Morrissey) and Martin (Chris Coy) antagonize him. In the end, Rick, who owes the life of his daughter Judith to Tyreese, buries him and places his signature bennie on the cross that marks his grave.

This episode also sees more heartbreak for Noah (Tyler James Williams), fresh off the loss of Beth. Rick and the group want to fulfill Beth’s promise to reunite Noah with his family, but the community has been overrun, and everyone there perished.

This episode also sees Michonne (Danai Gurira) ready to settle down. She wonders if Noah’s family’s former community could be fortified. Instead, she and Rick decided to follow Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) and the others on their trip to Washington.
