The Walking Dead series surprised fans during the series finale episode, “Rest in Peace.” The last episode of the series first experienced a one-year time jump showing where the characters landed after the takedown of the Commonwealth. Then when the screen went dark, two familiar faces appeared. Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Dania Gurira) returned to The Walking Dead universe in the series finale coda scene.

This scene was short but gave some vital information to fans. Rick’s scenes took place sometime after he was traded to the CRM (Civic Republic Military) by Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh), but before Michonne discovered he survived the blast at the bridge. Michonne’s scenes took place in a more recent setting as she will still actively searching for her true love.

One question that was answered in the coda scene was how Rick’s possessions washed up on Bloodworth Island, which was the home of Virgil (Kevin Carroll). Michonne discovered Rick’s boots and an iPhone with an engraving of her and Judith and assumes Virgil knows something, but these items were found on a boat, and he never saw the owner. In the coda scene, viewers see Rick throw his possession on a boat as he is found by a CRM helicopter. The same boat that would wash ashore on Bloodworth Island later.

In Rick’s scenes, he is penning a letter to Michonne that he rolls up and places inside a bottle thrown in the river. It seems that this action will be significant later on, perhaps in the Rick & Michonne series, or Daryl (Norman Reedus), who went searching for the couple, could find it. It seems odd they would draw attention to this if it wasn’t a vital piece of the story. Viewers hear Rick speak what he is writing, but there could be more to what he wrote in this letter leading to his location or some other vital piece of information.

The Rick and Michonne series recently began filming in New Jersey and is expected to release the six-episode first season in 2024.
