Fans of The Walking Dead characters Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) are excited to see the pair team up in the new spinoff The Walking Dead: Dead City. The latest teaser confirms what many have long speculated as the only reason these long-time enemies would pair up, Maggie’s son Hershel has been abducted. But the reason goes deeper; Negan is the key to his rescue.

The recently released teaser for Dead City reveals a much different feel to this series than the flagship, as the woods have been replaced with concrete and buildings. The filming style is similar to that of The Walking Dead episodes “Archeron 1 and 2,” the first two episodes of season 11 of TWD.

The teaser opens with Maggie running towards Hershel, who is being taken away, and the camera zooms in on Željko Ivanek’s character, The Croat. He appears to be the leader of some group in Manhattan. It is unclear if the abduction takes place on or outside the island. So there is still some mystery about the details of what led to his kidnapping.

Many viewers knew for Maggie to team up with Negan, it would likely have something to do with her son. But there was still the question, why Negan? There are many others Maggie is much closer to who would aid her in recovering her son.

In the teaser, it appears that Negan is a wanted man. Perlie Armstrong (Gaius Charles) holds a wanted poster with what appears to be Negan’s likeness. And viewers hear Maggie say, “He has my son; you’re the key to getting him back.” Is Negan the ransom they demand for Herhsel’s return?

Dead City will take place approximately two to three years after the events of the series finale episode of The Walking Dead. In the last episode of TWD, during the one-year time jump, Negan isn’t seen. By then, he and his wife Annie (Medina Senghore) would have had their child, but nothing is mentioned. By the time Dead City comes around, nothing will have been heard from Negan for about four years. Morgan has teased fans that Negan could revert to his old ways.

It will be interesting to see what Negan has been up to during that time that would see him wanted by a group in Manhattan. Remember that Manhattan had been cut off from the mainland since early in the outbreak. The other big question is, where are Annie and their child?

The Walking Dead: Dead City will premiere on AMC in June 2023.
