Fans of The Walking Dead’s Rick Grimes & Michonne have much to look forward to as the apocalyptic power couple returns to the franchise in their own spinoff series. Filming for the series began in February 2022 in New Jersey, and the TWD fandom went bonkers at the first image AMC released of the characters’ reunion.
Andrew Lincoln portrayed Rick Grimes beginning in the pilot episode through season 9 when it was thought he died in a bridge explosion. Danai Gurira was introduced as Michonne in season 3 when she rescued Andrea (Laurie Holden). Michonne departs the series when she discovers Rick didn’t die and goes in search of him. Of course, both storylines were created to account for the actor’s choices to leave the series for their own reasons.
The Walking Dead series finale episode that aired in November 2022 would include a surprise coda scene featuring the return of Lincoln and Gurira. The short clip catches fans up on what has transpired with these characters since they were last seen.

The new series is described as an epic love story, and fans can expect Rick & Michonne’s personalities to have significantly altered since the last time they were seen. Each one has been through their own set of trials with the intent of finding one another. Showrunner Scott M. Gimple said fans could expect to see Red Machete Rick and Michonne fighting the governor days. That will make for a fascinating storyline.
Summit, the Rick & Michonne spinoff series, is expected to release on AMC in 2024.
