Walking Dead Diverged aired two years ago and divided the fandom
By Renee Hansen
During season 10 of The Walking Dead, fans were given six bonus episodes focusing on fewer characters due to the pandemic filming precautions. Many of these episodes featured fan favorites like Maggie (Lauren Cohan), Aaron (Ross Marquand), Princess (Paola Lázaro), Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), and more. Two of these episodes significantly focused on Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) and Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus). For fans of this duo, it was amazing to see so much of their stories fleshed out; for viewers who weren’t fans, it seemed overkill to feature them in two of these episodes with so many other characters that could have been a focus.
The first Caryl-focused episode was 1018, “Find Me,” which saw Daryl during the time he spent searching for Rick (Andrew Lincoln) after the bridge explosion. The episode begins with Daryl and Carol going hunting, and they come upon a cabin that brings back difficult memories for Daryl. During his time away, Daryl met a woman named Leah (Lynn Collins) with who he formed a romantic relationship, and this is also where he met Dog.
The cabin was Leah’s, where he lived with her for a time. It was an exciting look at Daryl’s life away from the other survivors when Carol would visit him and bring him food. This episode ends with the pair having an argument leading them in separate ways.
The Walking Dead – Diverged
The following bonus episode, 1021, “Diverged,” was the other episode that featured Daryl and Carol that takes place while their relationship was still very strained. They each go about their own tasks and encounter many difficulties. It was an interesting look a what the survivors do during their downtime.
The episode contained a lot of symbolism and had a deeper meaning, plus it delved deeper into Carol’s psyche as she continued to encounter challenging moments throughout her life.
The episode shows the parallels between the two characters’ actions while they are apart. Carol must find something to keep her occupied, while Daryl must find parts to repair his bike. They are both searching for something.
We see Carol use the knife Daryl gave her when at the same time, Daryl reaches to use the knife and finds it is gone. He has to repair a hole in a hose for his bike while she discovers the rat chewed the lamp wire. This symbolizes the brokenness in each character.
The episode goes on to show their parallel journey, but if you aren’t a fan of these characters, the episode could have been quite dull.
Today we posted photos of this episode on social media, and one fan pointed out just how much this episode has divided the fandom even two years later.
