Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman recently produced Renfield, a movie starring Nicolas Cage as Count Dracula and Nicholas Hoult in the titular role as Dracula’s lackey, has another project in the works. Deadline has exclusively revealed that Kirkman will produce a revamp of The Mole People.

Pitched to Universal Pictures by Chris Winterbaur, known for Wyrm and Moonshot, as a revamping of the 1956 horror classic The Mole People. Winterbaur will write the script, with Kirkman and Dave Alpert at Skybound producing the yet-to-be-named movie. Universal execs Holly Goline, Jay Polidoro, and Matt Reilly oversee the project.

The original film found archaeologists stumbling upon the underground dwelling of a race of darkness dwellers ruled by a high priest. These beings could see in low light and had no pigmentation due to living without light for so long. The priest, threatened by the people invading their lair, wants them all dead.

The new version will see a woman battle Mole People while trying to rescue her grandchildren from their father. She must traverse the underground tunnels and the people who live there.

While this movie may not have the cult following as a Dracula film like Renfield, horror movie buffs will be delighted to see yet another classic horror film adapted with a modern flare.
