Fear the Walking Dead’s Lennie James joins musical film The End

Lennie James has wrapped filming for his role as Morgan Jones on Fear the Walking Dead. The series will premiere its eighth and final season on AMC and AMC+ in May 2023. Deadline reports that James has already begun his next project, a musical film titled The End. 

Directed by Joshua Oppenheimer, known for the Oscar-nominated documentaries, The Act of Killing and Look of Silence, The End is a musical film that gets its musical inspiration from the Golden Age of Broadway. The story follows the last humans on earth housed in a bunker two decades after the world’s end.

The End has a small cast of a mother, father, and their 20-year-old son, along with a maid, a doctor, a butler, and a young woman. The son was born in the bunker and has never seen the outside world, and the young woman barely survived the world to make her way inside the bunker.

The film began filming this month in Ireland and will continue through spring in Italy and Germany. James was announced with fellow cast members Moses Ingram, Michael Shannon, Bronagh Gallagher, and Tim McInnerny. This group joins the previously announced Tilda Swinton and George Mckay.

The official synopsis reads:

"A post-apocalyptic story about a rich family living in a salt mine converted into a luxurious home. The earth around them has apparently been destroyed, but their son has never seen the outside world. As a young girl appears at the entrance of the bunker, the balance of the family is threatened. A wealthy family survives in a palatial bunker, two decades after the world has ended. There is a mother, father, and their twenty-year-old son – he was born in the bunker and has never seen the outside world. There is a maid, with whom the son has his only honest relationship. There is also a doctor, a butler – and finally a young woman who, having barely survived, manages to find her way in. Before the young woman arrives, the family celebrates their survival as confirmation of their success and righteousness, but unspoken blame over leaving loved ones behind has come between the parents, hollowing out whatever intimacy they once shared. They struggle to repress the guilt they feel for this – as well as a more diffuse regret for contributing to the world’s end."

Lennie James other roles

James has portrayed Morgan Jones in The Walking Dead universe since the pilot episode of The Walking Dead in 2010. Fans long to see a reunion between Morgan and Rick (Andrew Lincoln) that could happen in the spinoff series Summit. Only time will tell if fans will get the reunion between these two characters.

James’ is also known for his BAFTA-winning series Save Me, which was recently renewed for a third season. James created and wrote this series, in which he also plays a character named Nelson “Nelly” Rowe.
