The Walking Dead – Here’s Negan best of 10c bonus episodes
By Renee Hansen
During season 10 of The Walking Dead, fans were treated to six bonus episodes due to the pandemic. Each of these episodes highlighted fewer characters and gave a glimpse into the lives of the characters featured. The sixth and best episode of season 10c was “Here’s Negan,” a story adapted from the same-titled comic.
“Here’s Negan” serves as an origin story of the villain known as Negan, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. In this story, viewers learn that Negan has always been a jerk, but before becoming the cutthroat leader of the Saviors, he did tap into his softer side.
This episode featured Morgan’s wife, Hilarie Burton Morgan as his on-screen wife, Lucille. She did an outstanding job in her portrayal of this character. The tender love story, compounded with the heartbreaking cancer diagnosis and all that follows, was an emotional roller coaster for viewers. The Morgans did the story justice, and fans, even those who aren’t fans of Negan, appreciated the episode for the story and skill of the actors.
The Walking Dead – Here’s Negan
“Here’s Negan” reveals much about Negan and how he became the leader of the Saviors. He began as a gym teacher who, after a bar fight, could no longer work with the children, a job he loved. Much to his wife’s dismay, he spends his days playing video games when he should be looking for employment. At some point, he seeks comfort in the arms of Lucille’s best friend and is with her when Lucille finds out she has cancer.
Her diagnosis comes at the onset of the outbreak, and Negan then becomes an attentive husband and caregiver. Viewers watch the beautiful love story unfold, knowing things will not end well for Negan. When he searches for medicine and is captured by Craven and his men, it is evident that he wouldn’t return to her in time. But the scene he came upon was gut-wrenching.
This sent him into his downward spiral, and when he began to exact his revenge on the men who captured him and prevented him from returning to Lucille with the medicine, he changed. He transformed into the man who would eventually use his weapon, Lucille, to bash the brains of anyone he chose.
This episode was a fantastic origin story that gave vital information into what transformed Negan from mild-mannered gym teacher into one of the worst villains of The Walking Dead.
