By Renee Hansen
The Walking Dead universe has a long list of spinoffs, including several yet to be released. One unique spinoff is the episodic anthology Tales of the Walking Dead. This series premiered in the summer of 2022 with six standalone episodes. In June 2023, the series will be available on Blu-ray and DVD.
The series was created by TWD Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple and Channing Powell, the showrunner who previously wrote episodes of The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead. TWD director Michael Satrazemis directed three of the six episodes, with Ron Underwood, Haifaa al-Mansour, and Deborah Kampmeier directing the remaining three.
Tales of the Walking Dead: The First Complete Season is available to pre-order on Blu-ray and DVD on Amazon or wherever you purchase physical copies of your favorite shows and movies. The official release date is June 27, 2023. The two-disc set has a run time of 4 hours and 24 minutes. There is no information about special features included with the Blu-ray or DVD.
Tales of the Walking Dead – a great standalone series in TWDU
Tales of the Walking Dead introduced a brand new set of characters in the same world as The Walking Dead. Each story is set in a new location around the United States and set at different times after the outbreak, including one episode 30 years after. The third episode, “Dee,” did see a familiar face in Samantha Morton’s Alpha. This episode is set when she was known as Dee before she became the leader of the group known as the Whisperers.
Although these episodes can be enjoyed without ever watching any other series within The Walking Dead universe, eagle-eyed fans will notice several Easter Eggs sprinkled throughout.
This series brought many talented actors into the TWD Family, including Oliva Munn, Jessie T. Usher, Danny Ramirez, Loan Chabanol, Embeth Davitz, Lauren Glazier, Daniella Pineda, Terry Crews, Anthony Edwards, Poppy Liu, Parker Posey, Julian Bell, Matt Medrano, Scarlett Blum and more.
