The Walking Dead: Dead City will be the first of two new spinoffs of The Walking Dead to release in 2023. This series will strangely pair up Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan), two characters who have been at odds since Negan brutally killed her husband, Glenn (Steven Yeun). The new story will see the duo track down Maggie’s son’s abductors, with Negan as the key to his release, will this series see Negan become a hero?

Maggie has understandably held a grudge against Negan for bludgeoning her husband at the beginning of season 7 of The Walking Dead. She was always trying to find a way to kill the former leader of the Saviors, and when Rick (Andrew Lincoln) had the chance to kill him but saved his life instead, it was too much for her. She would eventually take her son and leave the group.

Years later, she would return to find Negan as a productive member of the communities, a notion that didn’t sit well with her. She hadn’t witnessed everything he did to try and redeem his past actions. When she was forced to partner with him, he told her some hard truths, and they came to an agreement.

By the series finale of The Walking Dead, Maggie told Negan that while she was appreciative of his efforts to save her son when she remembers her husband, she can only see his bashed head with Negan looking on with a smile across his face.

The Walking Dead: Dead City

The premature announcement that Negan and Maggie would team up in a spinoff took away much of the unknown between the characters on The Walking Dead. Even though there were many times it seemed like one of them would kill the other, fans knew the spinoff was already planned, so both would survive.

Now the synopsis for Dead City has revealed that not only will Maggie’s son Hershel (Logan Kim) be abducted by The Croat  (Željko Ivanek), but Negan is somehow the key to his release. There has been a lot of speculation that The Croat was a former member, and possible leader, of the Saviors. If Negan would sacrifice himself to save Hershel, he would certainly become a hero in Maggie’s eyes.

It will be interesting to see how The Croat fits into the story and Marshall Perlie Armstrong (Gaius Charles), who is hunting down Negan. He is the Marshall of a state called New Babylon.

The Walking Dead: Dead City premieres on AMC and AMC+ on June 18 at 10 p.m. ET.
