The Met Gala is traditionally held on the first Monday of May each year. The 2023 event will be held on May 1 at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year’s theme, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” is a controversial one as it center’s around the late Karl Lagerfeld, whose decades-long career, while influential throughout the world, was also considered a bit controversial. Walking Dead actress Danai Gurira, who will reprise her role as Michonne in an upcoming spinoff with the working title Summit, has attended the event several times wearing some fabulous fashions.
Gurira’s name hasn’t appeared on the attendees lists for the 2023 Met Gala event yet, but you never know; she could attend as she is filming for the Rick and Michonne spinoff in New Jersey. This series is a spinoff of The Walking Dead that will continue the epic love story of Rick and Michonne.
Danai Gurira Met Gala
Let’s look at some of the unique creations she has worn at past events.
In 2016 the theme was “Manus X Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology,” which featured Taylor Swift as the host and Apple, fittingly, as the sponsor. Gurira wore a Giambattista Valli dress with Fernando Jorge and Monique Péan jewels this year. She looks stunning in the white gown.
The 2019 event had the theme “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” meaning over-the-top fashion. And the attendees didn’t disappoint. Gurira channeled her inner Oscar Wilde to create her look complete with a top hat, stick cane, and cape, which she coined “The Dandy Re-imagined.” Her black-tie look was accentuated with beads in her hair, Fred Leighton jewelry, and Jimmy Choo shoes.
In 2022 Gurira took the “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” theme to heart with a fantastic creation by 23-year-old designer Taofeek Abijako, a Nigerian designer and founder of Head of State. The pair wanted to embrace their African identities and used the historic international arts festival, Festac ’77, for inspiration. The dress was made from Mikado, a luxe Italian silk in a blue shade that was often used in paintings of the period. The striking blue silk was amazing against her dark skin. She accessorized with a Fly Whisk, an item used by influential people in African culture.
