The second episode of Fear the Walking Dead was centered on June (Jeana Elfman), Dwight (Austin Amelio), and Sherry (Christine Evangelista), but the final scene opened up the next chapter in the last season of the series. Madison (Kim Dickens) made a sacrificial move so that Morgan (Lennie James) could do something meaningful to help him move on.

This article contains spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead season 8, episode 2, “Blue Jay.”

During the second episode of Fear the Walking Dead’s season 8, “Blue Jay,” some fascinating and creepy insight was exposed about PADRE. One of the women in charge, Shrike (Maya Eshet), is in charge of an operation that uses human test subjects to find a cure for the virus. It is a very twisted experiment that June has been forced into being a part of due to her medical knowledge.

The humans are bitten by walker’s heads extended on a mechanical apparatus and then experimented with radiation. The operation had been shut down, likely when June fled PADRE, but now that she is back in PADRE’s custody, Shrike is ready to begin the experiments again with Finch (Gavin Warren) Dwight & Sherry’s son as the first subject. She forces the couple to watch as a walker’s head bites their son and commands June to get to work to save his life.

Fear the Walking Dead – Madison’s sacrifice

In the final scene of the episode Morgan, recently demoted from his role as a collector, and Madison, recaptured after she escaped from prison, are on a truck headed to a destination unknown to them. But in the scene before, Shrike tells June more patients are on their way. She plans to use Morgan and Madison in her twisted experiments.

On their journey, Morgan and Madison discuss why Morgan feels he can’t take care of Mo (Zoey Merchant) and ask him what is holding him back. He tells her he has been thinking of something he didn’t do long ago. He tells her he cannot fix the worst of it but might be able to fix some of it.

This goes back to his guilt of losing his son Duane (Adrian Kali Turner) in The Walking Dead storyline. And it will likely lead to his return to King County, Georgia, which has been teased in the trailer for this season.

Madison fakes needing her oxygen so that Morgan can escape doing whatever he feels he needs to do to make things right so he can care for Mo. This is important to Madison because it is too late for her to make amends with her children and she is the one who abducted Mo, and so many other children.

Viewers are excited to learn what takes Morgan back to Georgia, where his story began.

Fear the Walking Dead premieres new episodes on AMC on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET and AMC+ three days early on Thursdays.
