Rick and Michonne Grimes (née Hawthorne) are fan-favorite characters made famous by The Walking Dead series and comic book stories. The characters’ stories differed from the comics, and in the series, the characters fell in love but were parted by what Michonne thought was the death of Rick. When she learned of his survival, nothing would stop her from finding him again. Their story will continue in a spinoff, Summit (working title), that recently wrapped filming and will premiere in 2024.

Andrew Lincoln has portrayed Rick since the pilot episode of The Walking Dead, which premiered in 2010. Danai Gurira would play Michonne beginning in season 3. Looking back at earlier seasons, it is easy to see how their relationship grew into what is described as an epic love story.

In season 9, Rick sacrificed himself in a heroic move by blowing up a bridge to keep a horde of walkers from threatening his family and friends. Viewers were privy to the fact that he was blown clear, but Michonne and the others thought he was dead. Rick was whisked away in a CRM (Civic Republic Military) helicopter with Anne/Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh), using him as her key into the organization where she would become a high-ranking officer.

Michonne would later discover that Rick survived and head off searching for him. During the final episode of The Walking Dead, fans were treated to a coda scene featuring Rick and Michonne that filled in a few of the gaps of what has occurred since they were last seen.

The Walking Dead Summit – Rick & Michonne spinoff

The spinoff series featuring Rick and Michonne began filming in February 2023; in May, it was reported to have wrapped. The series will be a six-episode story that  AMC’s Walking Dead Universe chief content officer Scott M. Gimple has teased fans stating, “It’s an epic and insane love story… but we also see that Red Machete Rick. We see that Michonne who taught a thing or two to the Governor.”

Lincoln and Gurira also serve as executive producers with Denise Huth and Brian Bockrath.

A statement was issued announcing that filming has wrapped for the series.
