The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is the fifth spinoff of The Walking Dead that has received a positive reception from critics and viewers. There have been many interesting new characters introduced into TWDU, and one of those is a young boy named Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi), who is believed to be the one to lead humanity’s revival.

Laurent is a boy whose traumatic birth, during which his mother reanimated into a walker, or hungry one, as the Parisians refer to them, is considered miraculous. His aunt, Sister Isabelle (Clémence Poésy), was present during his birth, and she watched her sister die and reanimate as Laurent was born.

Raised in an Abbey among the nuns, Laurent has been protected and shielded from the world his entire life. A monk who visited the abbey reaffirmed Isabelle’s belief in Laurent’s special abilities when he proclaimed that Laurent was an answer to a prophecy. The boy says he feels things in his stomach and is in tune with what others are feeling.

Many have compared this series to The Last of Us, which also sees a hero accompany, in this case, a young girl who is believed to be immune to a virus. While there are many similarities, the Daryl Dixon series has yet to show signs that Laurent is immune.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – Laurent

In an interview with AMC Talk, Scigliuzzi discussed Laurent and filming the series.

When asked about Laurent’s sorrow in being labeled “special,” he replied that he knows he isn’t like other children because he has been told this his whole life. In episode 2, when they encounter the children at the school, he just wants to fit in. He has never been around other children, and this experience was new to him, which explains why he wanted to stay.

They also discussed his relationships with Sylvie (Laïka Blanc-Francard), which he describes as a best friend situation, and Isabelle, an essential figure in his life who is more like an overprotective mother.

"I wouldn’t like my mom to be like that! It’s like he’s a newborn baby, and she feels she has to protect him all the time. It is a good thing in a way and I do understand that [protective impulse]. But I think this is why Isabelle and family are really the most important things to Laurent."

He also stated he enjoys filming the scenes when all the characters are together. He especially likes film with Norman Reedus, who plays Daryl Dixon, as ” he’s just a funny guy who makes me laugh all the time.”

The group is on a journey to The Nest where it is said Laurent will be groomed to fulfill his destiny. Only time will tell exactly what that is.
