The Walking Dead series is set in an apocalypse, so death is inevitable. What is different about this series is the ability to introduce characters in whom viewers become invested, which in turn makes the deaths even more heartbreaking. Throughout the eleven seasons, there were many deaths that wrecked fans; below is a list of the 10 most heartbreaking of the series.

First, let’s look at two deaths that, even though the series features a lot of death, blood, and guts, became divisive.

Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) and Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz) suffered horrific deaths at the hands of Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). The scene of Negan’s lineup was straight from the comics, but it became controversial when played out on screen so much so that many fans stopped watching after this event took place.

When Abraham was chosen instead of Glenn, as was in the comics, fans breathed a sigh of relief, believing Glenn was safe. Then Daryl (Norman Reedus) took matters into his own hands. This displeased Negan, who, in a shocking movie, chose Glenn as his second victim in response to Daryl’s misconduct.

Another death that split the fandom was that of Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs). Love or hate him, fans were shocked to see him reveal the walker bite on his abdomen, knowing there was no saving him. Even if you weren’t a fan of Carl, it was heartbreaking to watch Rick (Andrew Lincoln) & Michonne (Danai Gurira) deal with this devastating loss.

These deaths will consistently rank as number one on most people’s lists, so we honor them here and do not include them in our rankings.
