Greg Nicotero praises Flanagan’s House of Usher, Frank Darabont & more
By Renee Hansen
Walking Dead universe director, EP, and master of all things SFX, Greg Nicotero has been a busy man. After completing the final season of The Walking Dead he quickly switched to production of the fourth season of the Creepshow series which was released on Shudder on October 13 and then on to Paris where he has been working on The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. Somewhere between it all he was able to squeeze in a viewing of The Fall of the House of Usher, a Netflix original by Mike Flanagan.
Nicotero was so impressed with the House of Usher that he posted on Instagram, for the first time since January 2023, when he wished Daryl Dixon actor Norman Reedus a happy birthday.
The Fall of the House of Usher was created by Mike Flanagan, well known for The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and many other horror films and series. His latest gothic horror was inspired by a short story by Edgar Allan Poe that was initially published in Burton’s Gentlemen’s Magazine in 1839.
The story follows a successful but corrupt pharmaceutical company CEO whose children begin dying in horrifying and mysterious ways. These deaths are the result of questionable choices he made in the past.
Greg Nicotero – thoughts on The Fall of the House of Usher
Critics have given the series favorable reviews, as does Nicotero. He describes the series as “moving, disturbing poetic, horrifying, passionate all in the exact same moment.” This coming from a man who knows all about horror is a compliment indeed. He also likens Flanagan’s ensemble cast to those of original showrunner of The Walking Dead, Frank Darabont, known for several films in the horror genre including, The Mist. The Blob, The Fly, and A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.
Nicotero also praised actresses Samantha Sloyan and Ruth Codd who starred in House of Usher and the new season of Creepshow.
Nicotero is currently working on the second season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol, where he directs the season premiere epeisode, serves as an executive producer and works on SFX.
Comicbook.com has reported that he has also announced his involvement in the Rick and Michonne spinoff, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live. While he wasn’t in the States while they were filming he was able to oversee makeup effects from a distance.
