The midseason 8 premiere episode of Fear the Walking Dead began the countdown to the end of the series. The back half of the eighth and final season of the series started with an introduction to the familiar face of Victor Strand (Colman Domingo), who is now using a new name, Anton, and Troy Otto (Daniel Sharman), who has returned from the “dead.”
The episode, titled “Anton,” reveals Strand’s new life, where he is now named Anton, with his husband Frank (Isha Blaaker) and his adopted son Klaus (Julian Grey) in a German community located in a hotel. The whole premise of this new community is that everyone deserves a second chance, which Strand describes as “an oasis for the dispossessed, the desperate, the weary.”
A newcomer is reported to Strand as a woman who is scared and having trouble breathing. Strand is shocked to see Madison (Kim Dickens) alive. She gives away Strand’s secret, but his new family refuses to believe it, and of course, he denies it.
The story continues with a group looking for Madison, but they won’t reveal their leader’s identity. Viewers who have watched the trailers prior to the episode knew Troy would be introduced soon. He makes an impressive entrance, showing off his eye, which is now blind due to the blows from Madison’s hammer in season 3. He attempts to take the hammer to Strand’s head if Madison doesn’t reveal the location of PADRE.
Before he can strike him, in comes Daniel (Ruben Blades), June (Jeana Elfman), Sherry (Christine Evangelista), and others enter, weapons drawn. As they attempt to leave, Troy tells Madison that he killed her daughter Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) and has her prosthetic arm as proof. In a final dig, he tells her that he didn’t put Alica down but rather left to her wonder as he did in Mexico for so long.
