“There is something fundamentally wrong with you” are the words Daniel speaks to Madison after Charlie’s (Alexa Nisenson) death in this week’s episode. She begs him to help them defend PADRE against Troy (Daniel Sharman) and his group, but Daniel refuses because he feels he must protect the last person alive that he considers family, Luciana. He tells her he has lost two people dear to him because of her, and he won’t watch a third die as well.

The first death Daniel blames Madison for occurred in season 3. Daniel’s daughter Ofelia (Mercedes Mason) reunites with Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) after breaking away from the group when she believes her father perished in the fire at the Abigail Vineyard in season 2.  She wandered the desert, where  Qaletaqa Walker (Michael Greyeyes), chief of the Black Hat Reservation, discovered her.

When Madison discovers Daniel survived the fire, she arranges for Ofelia to be reunited with her father. During the journey, Ofelia is bit and succumbs to her injury before she can see her father again.

Fear the Walking Dead – Charlie’s death

In episode 8 of season 8, “Iron Tiger,” Madison learns how her son, Nick (Frank Dillane), died. Charlie, a character who was thought to have died from radiation exposure, appears as one of Luciana’s workers. She confesses that she is the one who killed Nick, and Madison comes unhinged.

Madison and Nick welcomed Charlie into their community, but she betrayed them and later kill Nick. She explains to Madison that she is genuinely sorry, sighting that she was only 11 and had many older people influencing her life.

Madison tells her if she really means what she says, she will do a task for her: kill Troy Otto. Charlie agrees, but the plan goes south, and Charlie sacrifices herself to honor Madison’s children’s memories and to keep PADRE safe.

This action sees Madison lose Daniel, a man who has been a part of her life since the beginning of the outbreak. She also loses Luciana because now Troy knows of her fuel-making services, making them vulnerable to an attack. This is a conversation that seems long overdue as Madison takes too many risks with others’ lives. This could be detrimental to her plan to keep PADRE safe.

She claims she has changed from the woman who abducted children for PADRE. Only time will tell if this is true.

Fear the Walking Dead airs new episodes on Sundays on AMC and AMC+.
