Fear the Walking Dead over uses “No one is gone, until they’re gone”
By Renee Hansen
TV series often bring back “dead” to add excitement and intrigue, but when is it too much? And by using this too often, does it drive fans away? Fear the Walking Dead uses a quote, “No one is gone until they’re gone,” a line uttered by Madison (Kim Dickens) before her death in season 4. It basically means that people still have a chance to live until they die.
Fear the Walking Dead has used this several times in the span of eight episodes. In the season 7 finale, Madison returned from the dead as a collector of children for the mysterious group, PADRE. Fans were delighted to see their favorite leader return after she was thought to have died in the fire at the Dell Diamond Stadium in season 4.
Then, during season 8, part 2, the first two episodes saw the return of two more characters who were believed dead.
Is Troy alive in Fear the Walking Dead?
Troy Otto, played by Daniel Sharman, was thought to have died in season 3. But the character makes his return in the final season. Alive and well, except for his blind eye caused when Madison bashed him with a hammer. He is hell-bent on revenge and wants PADRE because he and his group need a safe place to live.
What happened to Charlie in Fear the Walking Dead?
In season 7, Charlie was exposed to radiation, which gave her radiation burns and more, which put her on the brink of death. The difference with her return is that she was never declared dead in the series. Since she was a child, PADRE took her in and had the resources to help her overcome her ailment. She would then go to work for Luciana (Danay Garcia). Charlie and several other characters weren’t seen in the first part of season 8, and many assumed she died. In the second half of the final season, Charlie returns, confesses to Madison that she killed her son, and then sacrifices herself to keep PADRE safe.
While the concept of “No one is gone until they’re gone” is a good one, the overuse by Fear the Walking Dead has made it tired and not as impactful as it could be.
Perhaps the series should focus on the long list of characters whose “deaths” have yet to be addressed instead. This list comes from TWD Wiki, so only time will tell if these are the fates of these characters or not. Hopefully, some positive news comes before the end of the series.
