For the first time, Dead City is doing an alternate-reality episode. That’s right, they’re bringing Beth (Emily Kinney) back so that she and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) can reunite again. It makes sense, as there have been plenty of opportunities for characters to be explored with the number of The Walking Dead spinoffs.
That begs the question — what other characters would we want to see in this alternate reality episode? Or maybe another alternate reality episode in the future? Here are my four top picks.
Glenn
This is kind of the obvious choice, but I would love to see Glenn (Steven Yeun) in an alternate reality episode.
I know that Glenn and Maggie didn’t meet until season 2 and only really became an item because of the apocalypse, but I’d love to think that even in another reality they’d somehow still be together. Maybe that’s the meaning of Glenn’s last words to Maggie: “I’ll find you.”
Ouch, I made my heart hurt with that one.
Even so, seeing Glenn again would be so much fun. I know that Steven Yeun was ready to move on at a certain point from Glenn, but seeing him as his iconic character one last time would mean the world to longtime fans like me.
Tyreese
Do you remember, in season 5 of The Walking Dead, where they decided to hit us with two back-to-back deaths with both Beth in “Coda” and then Tyreese (Chad L. Coleman) in “What Happened and What's Going On"? Yeah, good times. Really sad days for teenage Alex.
Tyreese’s death was actually changed from the comics, where he was decapitated by the Governor, but in the show, he died of blood loss after his arm was amputated due to a walker bite. His death was underwhelming, and honestly, I would have loved to see him continue on. Plus, he and Maggie got along well. Tyreese and Beth had an air of hope to them, so seeing him in an alternate reality episode would be lovely.
Noah
Noah, hands down, had one of the most graphic deaths on the show, and it still peeves me off to this day that he was killed in that fashion. It felt like Beth’s death was for nothing since he didn’t even make it to season 6.
I also really love the actor who plays Noah, Tyler James Williams. While his character wasn’t around for long, I really enjoyed seeing his interactions with Beth. That genuinely could have been the start of a decent friendship between the two, a shared bond from being trapped in that hospital, but then it was ripped from our fingers. I think in my alternate reality, I would have loved to see Beth and him be friends in some shape or form.
Carl
I think an obvious choice for me for an alternate reality episode would be Carl. I will never get over his ridiculous death and how it felt for me that I was cheated out of the potential to see him become the main character of the show. I mean, that was always what The Walking Dead was supposed to be about — Carl telling the story in the future.
But the season 8 midseason finale, “How It's Gotta Be,” took that away from us, and I will never be the same.
I think if we saw him in an alternate reality episode, I’d love to see him grow up, maybe make a name for himself, and actually be given the chance to live rather than just survive. And he and Beth were always considered the younger ones of the group — it would make sense for him to appear in some fashion.
For now, I'll just deal with Beth being the only character to make another appearance. But if another alternate reality episode ever were to happen, I'm down for whoever wants to make an appearance.
