Deadline reports that Amazon MGM Studios will release a submarine action film titled Subversion, led by Chris Hemsworth, Michael Peña, and Lily James. The project recently added six to its cast, including one villain from The Walking Dead's final season.
Alex Meraz, who portrayed Brandon Carver, a member of The Reapers in the final season of The Walking Dead, joins the cast of Subversion. Meraz most recently starred in the third season of AMC's psychological thriller Dark Winds as Border Patrol Agent Ivan Muñoz.
Meraz was announced with Damon Herriman (The Bondsman), Jimmy Gonzalez (The Odyssey), CJ Bloomfield (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga), Awdo Awdo, and Saffron Deacon (Seriously Red). Details regarding the new cast members' characters have not been revealed yet. They join previously announced Hemsworth, Peña, James, Joe Cole, David Wenham, Robert John Burke, Simone Kessell, and Teresa Palmer.
Patrick Vollrath (7500) directs the script written by Andrew Ferguson, which tells the story of a naval commander (Hemsworth) who is blackmailed by a cartel-like group into piloting a submarine to transport illegal cargo through international waters. With a Coast Guard officer (James) tracking him, he must navigate blockades and perilous threats, both inside and outside of the vessel.
Filming for Subversion began in Queensland, Australia on September 17.

In March 2025, Meraz and fellow TWDU actress Jenna Elfman (June in Fear TWD) starred in the third season of Dark Winds, starring Zahn McClarnon, Kiowa Gordon, and Jessica Matten. The critically acclaimed series is now streaming on AMC+ and has been renewed for a fourth season.
The actor, well known for his role as Paul Lahote in the Twilight films, starred in the first season of Taylor Sheridan's drama Landman, alongside Billy Bob Thornton. Meraz portrayed Jimenez, lieutenant of the local Midland drug network, part of the international Galindo drug cartel.
Meraz also appeared in Bone Tomahawk, an intense horror western starring Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, Richard Jenkins, Lili Simmons, Evan Jonigkeit, David Arquette, Zahn McClarnon, and Sid Haig. This one isn't for everyone, as it is a slow burn that features a clan of cannibalistic troglodytes and one particular scene that stays with you for quite some time. However, for those seeking something different in the horror western genre, it is worth watching.
He also has two new projects in the works. He will star with TWD's Michael Rooker in Lee Sang-yong's Pig Village and alongside his Dark Winds co-star Kiowa Gordon in Many Wounds, a movie from Ojibwe filmmaker Jeremy Torrie.
