It's been quite the few years for Walking Dead fans. The TWD family saw their legendary AMC show conclude its 11-season run back in 2022 and then single-handedly launch a whole new chapter within a year. That new chapter consisted of high quality spinoffs designed to serve as sequel shows, starring main characters from the original series.
One of those shows concluded after its planned single season while the end of another has been confirmed. The last one standing hasn't had its future revealed, which raises questions about whether we're beginning to see the end of the TWD Universe come into focus. And yet, AMC made a rather major announcement in recent days that - while on the surface bittersweet - has prolonged the franchise for a little longer.
Daryl Dixon season 4's delay ensures the Walking Dead franchise lives into 2027
The Walking Dead's Streak is alive and well. Although fans initially weren't thrilled about AMC's announcement that The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 4 would be delayed until 2027 (after an originally planned 2026 release), they are relieved about the fact that it preserves the TWD Universe's uninterrupted run. See, if the season had aired this year, it very well could have left the franchise with no content to air next year, possibly breaking the saga's 17-year streak of continued TWDU content.
Since The Walking Dead first premiered on AMC back in 2010, there have been episodes of at least one TWD Universe series on AMC each annual year. The vast majority of that 17-year run has obviously relied on episodes of the original show, but Fear The Walking Dead's lengthy run, miniseries The Walking Dead: World Beyond and Tales of the Walking Dead also helped fill in any gaps. Since then, we have had Daryl Dixon, as well as fellow offshoots The Walking Dead: Dead City and The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live to keep us entertained. But all of that was momentarily threatened by a 2027 that had no TWD shows to offer.
The third season of Dead City is currently airing this summer while Daryl Dixon season 4 was initially expected in the fall. As Daryl's fourth season is its last and Dead City has yet to be renewed, that left 2027 completely empty when it came to Walking Dead shows. While we all thought that the most obvious solution here would be to renew Dead City for a fourth season, moving Daryl Dixon season 4 turned out to be easier.
It was Norman Reedus who made the move reveal via a social media post, just a few hours before AMC revealed it via the San Diego Comic-Con panel for Dead City season 3. While it did understandably catch fans off-guard, this will ultimately prove to be a silver lining for the franchise's longevity because, for a while there, it was unclear if we would have any new shows after this year.
Walking Dead fans get to spend another year with their favorite franchise
The future of the Walking Dead franchise has been up for debate over the past two years. Ever since it became clear that AMC was beginning to sunset the "new era" spinoffs, that has left the franchise without a clear pathway forward (after all, where do you go when your post-finale era is suddenly building up to its own finale?). With rumors that Dead City would end as well (although they have yet to be proven accurate), was it time to accept that the TWD Universe was over?
Not according to President of AMC Studios, Dan McDermott, who confirmed that Walking Dead shows "will always" have a presence on their platforms. Of course, that was great news for the long-term future of the franchise, but it didn't solve the 2027 issue. Truthfully, either Dead City or Daryl Dixon could have solved that immediate problem by shifting their seasons into next year - and Dead City still could if AMC chooses to renew it - but the latter proved to be the better option here.
A Dead City season 4 renewal would still require filming on the new season to take place and, if for some reason they weren't able to make that happen in the near-future, that season could end up delayed. Daryl Dixon season 4, on the other hand, is in the bag, with production wrapping in Spain at the end of 2025, so moving that to 2027 was an easy solution here. And, in doing so, it gives AMC's Chief Content Officer of The Walking Dead Universe, Scott M. Gimple, a chance to figure out where the long-term future of the TWD Universe can go next.
All in all, delaying Daryl Dixon season 4 until 2027 may have been a necessary evil that ensures the survival of the TWD franchise. If that's the case, it truly is the announcement we didn't know we needed.
