One of the most influential zombie films of the last decade is officially heading back to the big screen. The acclaimed South Korean thriller Train to Busan is set for a special 4K theatrical re-release in August 2026!
This gives audiences a chance to experience the high-speed horror spectacle in a completely new way. Nearly 10 years after its original debut, the film’s return is already generating major excitement among horror fans and cinephiles alike!

A modern zombie classic returns to theaters
Thanks to Well Go USA Entertainment, Train to Busan will be hitting theaters across the U.S. and Canada once again as part of a special 10th anniversary celebration. The re-release is currently set for Aug. 14, 2026, marking a decade since the film first premiered. At this time, full theatrical rollout details are unknown. In other words, it hasn’t been revealed exactly which cities, theaters, or number of screens will participate in this special re-release.
Originally released in 2016, Train to Busan quickly became a global phenomenon. Directed by Yeon Sang-ho and written by Park Joo-suk, the film follows a group of passengers trapped on a high-speed bullet train from Seoul to Busan as a mysterious outbreak spreads across South Korea.
Unlike traditional zombie films that rely solely on gore and survival horror, Train to Busan stood out for its deeply human core. At the center of the story is a strained father-daughter relationship, which unfolds against the chaos of a nationwide infection. We follow fund manager Seok-woo as he reluctantly agrees to take his young daughter Su-an on a train journey to visit her mom for her birthday, only for their trip to become a fight for survival when the virus begins to spread carriage by carriage.
What then began as an ordinary journey quickly spirals into a full-blown nightmare. This emotional grounding helped elevate the film beyond genre expectations and cement its place as one of the most impactful horror films of the 21st century.
Now, with a newly restored 4K version heading to theaters for the first time, fans will get to experience Train to Busan with enhanced clarity, sharper detail, and improved visual intensity. This will make its already nerve-wracking sequences even more immersive!
Squid Game's Gong Yoo starred in the lead role as Seok-woo, while Kim Su-an played Su-an. The rest of the cast included Jung Yu-mi, Ma Dong-seok, Choi Woo-shik, Ahn So-hee, Kim Eui-sung, and others.
In addition to Train to Busan's re-release, Well Go USA Entertainment will also be releasing Yeon Sang-ho's newest zombie flick in theaters this August. Titled Colony, the movie is set to hit the big screen in the U.S. on Friday, Aug. 28, 2026.
Colony follows biotechnology professor Se-jeong, who attends a biotech conference that quickly descends into chaos after a rapidly mutating virus is released. As the outbreak spreads through the building, those infected begin to transform in unpredictable and evolving ways.
In response, authorities lock down the entire building, trapping Se-jeong and the remaining survivors inside with a growing, ever-changing threat they can’t fully understand or escape. The movie's cast is made up of Jun Ji-hyun, Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Kim Shin-rok, and Shin Hyun-been. We also shared the first teaser below!
Train to Busan and Colony are both slated to hit theaters in August 2026. Don't forget to mark down their official theatrical release dates!
