There is no doubt about it: The Walking Dead revolutionized the zombie genre. Although a long-standing successful formula for the big screen, the undead weren't that regular of a fixture on the small screen - at least not in modern times. But that all changed when Rick Grimes appeared on screens in 2010, gifting us all with a debut that would go on to change the face of television for the better part of a decade.

The TWD Universe is largely responsible for the wave of zombie shows we've seen over the years; from Fear The Wlaking Dead to the modern Daryl Dixon and Dead City, there have been plenty of spinoffs in this beloved franchise. But we've also seen the TV landscape shift to allow for the likes of World War Z and The Last of Us - shows that might not have been possible if it had not been for the game-changing popularity of The Walking Dead.

Now, a new series has thrown its hat in the ring, with many praising it for being a phenomenal outing in its respective franchise. It's one of the best zombie shows in recent memory, quite possibly putting it on par with TWD. It also has a unique connection to the franchise, so its adoration isn't all that surprising.

Marvel Zombies is a thriller of a watch and it's now available to watch on Disney Plus

After a lot of anticipation, Marvel Zombies has arrived on Disney Plus. Produced by Marvel Studios Animation, the series isn't anything like we're used to seeing from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, employing horror movie elements to bring some of the most vicious animated content you'll see all year to life. And it's an absolute must-watch for zombie fans.

Marvel Zombies is a spinoff of previous MCU series What If...?, carrying on a story arc from the show's first season. That story was the center of a season 1 episode and it revolves around an alternate world in the MCU's Multiverse Saga which sees the world ravaged by a zombie virus accidentally brought back from the Quantum Realm by Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne. It wipes out most of The Avengers early on, leaving only some remaining as new heroes rise up too.

Although that episode of What If...? was relatively tame in terms of zombie violence, it set the stage for Marvel Zombies to take that one step further (or, well, many, many steps further). The new Disney Plus miniseries (which holds the potential to become an actual ongoing series), is rated TV-MA, meaning that it gets very mature very fast, with all of the gruesome body horror and frights that you can expect from a typical zombie property.

The four-part series is focused on the remaining heroes' attempts to restore the world to what it once was, by ultimately defeating Wanda Maximoff, a.k.a. the Scarlet Witch, who has become the Queen of the Dead, amassing an army of zombies to do her bidding.

In case you TWD fans needed any more convincing, the show also has a surprising connection (or two) to The Walking Dead. For starters, the MCU series is based on the comic book series of the same name, which was written by Robert Kirkman (who, of course, wrote the classic Walking Dead comic series). So it goes without saying that the Marvel Zombies are in good hands! And then there's the fact that Okoye - the character played by TWD's Danai Gurira in the Black Panther and Avengers movies - has a prominent role (although Gurira doesn't reprise her role here).

If that doesn't convince you, how about this epic homage to The Walking Dead from Marvel Studios itself?!

Go on, give this one a try! You know you want to!

Marvel Zombies is now streaming on Disney Plus.
