Boondock Saints III gets an exciting production update!
By Renee Hansen
In 1999, Walking Dead's Norman Reedus starred alongside Nefarious actor Sean Patrick Flanery in the first installment of the Boondock Saints movies. The actors portrayed fraternal twin vigilantes Murphy and Connor MacManus in the first and second movies and will reprise their roles for a third.
Boondock Saints (1999) was the directorial debut for Troy Duffy who also directed the second, Boondock Saints: All Saints Day (2009). The first films premiere occurred just weeks after the tragic Columbine High School massacre and was then down played due to concerns of copy cat crimes. While the movie didn't do well at the box office it quickly became a cult classic that lead to the creation of the sequel.
Rumors have long circulated regarding another film, and in March 2024, it was confirmed that Thunder Road Productions, known for the John Wick series of films, would join Impossible Dream Entertainment and rights holder Dragonfly Films to create the long-awaited third movie. Reports also circulated that Reedus and Flanery were on board for the project, which both actors have since confirmed.
Recently, Flanery spoke to Screen Rant, who asked about the film's production. Flanery shared:
"That motherf***er text me last night. He's one of my best friends. Solid dude. I can't say that about a lot of people in Hollywood, but that is a solid motherf***er. One of the best dudes in Hollywood, and he's been a dear friend of mine since ’94. We shot that in ’ 99… We're shooting between March and August."

This is great news for fans who have longed to see a continuation of the MacManus brothers' story. The first film followed the brothers who receive a "calling" from God to rid their hometown of Boston of the wicked, so the innocent can flourish. In the second movie the brothers are living in Ireland when they are framed for the murder of a Catholic priest which forces them to return to Boston.
The third installment has been described as the franchise's reimagining and universe expansion. Duffy, who is creating a book series centered around the brothers, won't return as director. No announcement on a new director or other cast members has been made yet. It has been speculated that if filming takes place in the spring of 2025, the movie could be released in 2026.

He also hosts AMC Network's Ride with Norman Reedus, a docu-travel series that follows Reedus and his guests on motorcycle tours in different worldwide locations.
Sean Patrick Flanery is well known for his role as Jeremy "Powder" Reed in the 1995 sci-fi drama Powder. He has also starred in The Dead Zone, George Lucas' The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, and Saw 3D. In 2023 he played a convicted death row inmate Edward Wayne Brady in the independent Christian thriller Nefarious. Reedus and Flanery have both written novels. In 2022, Reedus published his first novel, The Ravaged, which was a New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and USA Today bestseller. This gritty, fast-paced story tells three different but parallel personal quests. Flanery's novel Jane Two is a coming-of-age novel that draws on his own experiences as a teen.
