After a crushing blow was dealt at San Diego Comic-Con, The Walking Dead fans learned much better news about The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 4 at New York Comic Con last week.
During the AMC+ at NYCC on Friday, Oct. 9, Melissa McBride and Norman Reedus joined Scott M. Gimple and David Zabel for a short panel. The group revealed a new teaser for the final season of The Walking Dead spinoff and confirmed a February 2027 release window. That's much, much earlier than most fans were expecting.
Originally, it looked like Daryl Dixon season 4 would premiere following Dead City season 3 around this time. Every season of Daryl Dixon has premiered in September so far, so with production wrapping in late 2025, we all thought that we would be seeing Daryl (Reedus) and Carol (McBride) ending their story in 2026. Then, we learned at SDCC that Daryl Dixon season 4 was getting pushed back to 2027, and we were worried that we would be waiting until summer or fall until the final season of Daryl Dixon was released.
We don't know the official release date for Daryl Dixon season 4 just yet. AMC isn't announcing that information yet, but obviously, the February 2027 release window is a lot sooner than we were expecting to see the final season.
That's the good news for fans! While AMC is dragging this out a bit, they aren't dragging the final season out for years or anything like that. That should be a huge relief for fans because it really, really looked like we might be waiting until next summer to watch the end of Daryl Dixon.

Daryl Dixon season 4's early 2027 premiere means a long wait for other Walking Dead projects
I must admit that the decision to bump Daryl Dixon season 4 to 2027 but only hold it until February, the second month of the year, is quite puzzling, though. It does check a box that there will be a Walking Dead show in 2027, so that part of it makes sense, but there are other questions about the franchise that need to be answered to fully understand this decision.
We know there have been plenty of things mentioned about the future of the franchise post-Daryl Dixon, but Dead City season 4 has not been ordered yet. Daryl Dixon ends with season 4, and we just learned during the NYCC panel that this will be the end for Daryl and Carol. I have a few ideas about what that means, but the main point is that we have no idea where the franchise is going from here.
There are no confirmed Walking Dead spinoffs in the works. Unless there are things happening behind the scenes, there are no plans to go into production on any other new shows anytime soon. After Daryl Dixon season 4, there's going to be a major Walking Dead drought.
While there's still time for things to change, even if Dead City season 4 gets picked up, we're looking at the least fruitful couple of years for The Walking Dead franchise in a very, very long time.
So, the good news is that Daryl Dixon season 4 is coming way sooner than fans thought, but the bad news is that we're going to be waiting a long, long time after season 4 ends until we see any new Walking Dead shows. Basically, Dead City season 4 is the only hope we have that we'll see another Walking Dead show outside of Daryl Dixon next year. Even if it is renewed, AMC might hold it for 2028, anyway.
We'll share more news about Daryl Dixon season 4 as we find out!
