You know, there comes a time in every TV universe’s life when it feels like we’re taking a bit of a step too far in the opposite direction. For shows in The Walking Dead universe, I have often felt that way.
Do I necessarily think we should have gone all the way to Europe, of all places, for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon? Nah, I’m a little iffy on that. When it comes to Dead City, I don’t really mind where we are right now.
I’m not saying that this show is perfect by any means, because trust me, it is not. There’s a lot it can do better, and hopefully, in the future, it will, if it's renewed for season 4. I will admit that season 3 of Dead City has been electric, and I’ve liked it way more than seasons 1 and 2.
And this season, they’re doing one specific thing I really love to see, and it involves my girl, Maggie (Lauren Cohan).
I really love that Maggie is testing the idea of love again
There is just something about a second love that I adore.
Look, I am not saying that Luis (Raúl Castillo) is the be-all, end-all for Maggie. I think that we really would need to get a little further into the season, as well as another season, for Maggie, of all people, to connect for real with someone like that. It would be shocking if she suddenly got with him, even if, in the timespan of the show, I’m sure it’s been months of working together.
In the Dead City episode, “Found/Lost,” where Maggie and Luis were on their own on a supply run, and she genuinely imagines kissing him during a celebration, it brought a smile to my face. It wasn’t really because I hated her with Glenn. Quite the opposite, really.
Glenn’s (Steven Yeun) death on the show was heartbreaking. Frankly, that word doesn’t even begin to explain how horrible it felt watching that happen. Maggie taking a long time to move past that — and harboring hatred toward the man who did it — makes sense.
Dead City season 3 has really been about growth with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie moving on from their past, working together to build something in Manhattan, and trying to figure out a path forward. Maggie imagining kissing someone else is another sign of growth, a moment that shows, “Hey, maybe I don’t need to be alone forever.”
I’m not entirely sure how I feel about Glenn and Maggie being classified as “soulmates,” as other fans have said. I do feel that if the apocalypse never happened, these two wouldn’t have crossed paths, unless Maggie somehow ordered a pizza all the way from Atlanta. I do think that in this world, they deserved to be together and that he was her person.
With that said, I also feel that even if your person passes away, you don’t need to stay on your own forever. You can actively choose to do so if that is what you want. At this point in Maggie’s life, she doesn’t need to experience that. She can be happy with someone else if she chooses to be. And while it was a quick moment, it was still one that made me think, “Huh, she might get someone in the end after all.”
As long as it’s anyone but Negan, I’m happy
But, that can't happen with Negan. Never Negan. Please, not Negan.
At San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Cohan even spoke out about the Maggie-Negan shipping and said she didn’t like it. Morgan has jokingly fought for it. But I am here to say that I still, 100%, do not want this to happen. And it’s mainly because of “Genesis.”
“Genesis” was the alternate-reality episode that just aired in season 3 and featured Maggie and Negan meeting in an alternate reality. In that episode, there was a line about how they knew each other in a different life, and their lives intersected across those lifetimes, and of course, shippers online were like, “OH MY GODDDDD, MY SHIP IS ACROSS TIMELINESSSSS” or whatever.
I just don’t agree with that. You can have what I like to call a “platonic soulmate,” someone who affects your life no matter what lifetime you’re in. But for these two? I would never put them together in a romantic sense, and I would like to think fans would understand that, too.
Maggie is smarter than that, and I don’t believe she would end up with Negan in that way unless the writers of this series were really on something and wanted to truly upset fans. And I can’t see them together like that either. It’s just really weird, and not even in a dark romance kind of way.
Again, though, that doesn’t mean I want Maggie alone forever. Glenn would want to see her happy, and I’m sure over time, she’ll find someone, whether that’s Luis or someone else. But that one moment made me realize she is at least ready to think about it. That’s all I can really ask for, as long as Negan is not involved.
