For those fans who have been watching Dead City season 3, there have been plenty of rumors about Maggie and Negan potentially becoming a romantic item. Now, at San Diego Comic-Con, Lauren Cohan set the record straight.
Speaking at a panel for Dead City in July 2026 (via Entertainment Weekly), the stars of the series were asked what the chances were of these two iconic The Walking Dead characters becoming an item. Cohan’s answer was simple: yeah, not happening.
"It’s so funny how people always want these things to happen in shows…you guys don’t want to see this happen."
Cohan went on to say that what is happening in the show, "of having two enemies work together and have [this] story,” is much better than watching the two characters become romantically involved.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan, however, had a completely different take, proclaiming, “I’m gonna say yes!” to which the crowd cheered. You can view the Instagram video below:
To be frank, while this would be an interesting turn of events for these two characters, it would certainly be a choice. As someone who watched The Walking Dead throughout its more than decade-long run, the idea of these two becoming a thing feels almost like an insult to Glenn’s memory. We were all there when Negan took a bat to Glenn’s head in season 6 and completely altered everything we held dear.
I mean, let’s be honest, Glenn’s demise was one of the most heartbreaking deaths on The Walking Dead. Somehow, it doesn’t feel the most gruesome – that’s more like Noah’s death scene, but still. Negan and Maggie getting together? How?
But, even so, there have been hints leading towards something like that. Their bond – or, really, the one that was formed out of force because of Dead City – is a combination of trauma and survivor’s guilt. And because of how the cards have played out, they have been constantly circling each other for ages in Dead City.
Now, with Dead City season 3, it’s sort of the end of an era for these two. They aren’t enemies anymore and are working much more closely together. They would even be called friends/allies. And due to their constant bickering and the slow evolution of their friendship, it’s only natural that some fans (not me) would make the connection that “hey, we could have an enemies-to-lovers situation on our hands.”
Even so, many fans have properly called out this notion. When the Dead City trailer released and showed Negan and Maggie bantering instead of tearing each other’s heads off as we are all very much used to, fans were furious – and they honestly have a right to be. Because what?
Either way, if this actually does happen in the future, it’s clear that Cohan is on one side while Morgan is very much on the other. Only time will tell, as Dead City continues, whether this is the direction they want to take.
