The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 is right around the corner, and now, the first look at the new season is here.
Collider got the exclusive first look at Dead City season 3 featuring Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Maggie (Lauren Cohan), and an old friend—or foe, depending on how you feel about Glenn Rhee's death in The Walking Dead.
Of course, I'm talking about Lucille, Negan's bat named after his wife, played by Morgan's real-life wife, Hilarie Burton. Lucille passed away in the early days of the zombie apocalypse, and Negan chose to honor her in a unique way: a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire.
In the image, Maggie is handing Lucille to Negan. We don't know the context, but it's definitely an interesting new image that will have Dead City fans talking about what it could mean in the upcoming third season.
As part of Collider’s Exclusive Summer Preview event, we’re debuting a brand-new look at The Walking Dead: #DeadCity Season 3. 🧟

After two seasons of chaos, tension, and reluctant teamwork, Negan and Maggie look closer than ever in the newly released image teasing the next… pic.twitter.com/RRpeIeO2iG
Lucille's return isn't all that surprising in and of itself, of course, for those watching. He's been using it off and on throughout Dead City. The original Lucille was actually broken in the original series, I believe, in season 10. Negan has been using a different bat but very similar-looking version of Lucille at times in Dead City. The surprising part to me, and probably most fans, is that Maggie is the one holding Lucille and giving it to Negan.
Remember, that is a copy, with some improvements, of the bat Negan used to kill Maggie's husband, Glenn, back in The Walking Dead season 7 premiere. I understand Maggie's journey after that and up to this point, but how can she even touch the baseball bat that killed her husband in such a gruesome, tragic, and heartless way and hand it over to the man who was holding said bat when Glenn died? It's beyond me, honestly.
For me, the first look is largely symbolic because, after the events of Dead City season 2, Maggie and Negan likely realize that they do need each other in order to survive what comes next in their story. It's mostly, in my opinion, about Maggie accepting her fate and choosing the best possible path forward for survival. That's going to be with Negan, for better or worse. Hopefully, it works out for her in the third season.
AMC has not revealed the Dead City season 3 release date yet, but we do know that the season premiere will screen at the Monte-Carlo TV Festival in June 2026. It's expected that the new season will premiere sometime this summer after screening at the festival.
We'll be sure to share more news about Dead City season 3 and its premiere on AMC when we find out! For now, you can watch the first two seasons on AMC+ and Netflix to catch up before the season 3 premiere soon.
