We're days away from Emily Kinney's return to The Walking Dead, and we just learned Kinney will be playing an original song in Dead City season 3 episode 6 on Sunday, Aug. 30.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kinney was asked by Dalton Ross, who was actually on set when episode 6 was filmed, about the original song she'll be performing in the episode. Ross revealed the song will be "Reasons to Stay Alive," which Kinney released back in 2023.
Kinney revealed how that was the song chosen for her episode in Dead City season 3.
"The first script that they sent me, it just said: 'Beth sings a folk song.' They didn’t know what song. And then we had a meeting to talk with the music supervisor and different people to talk about what song. They were like, 'Do you have any ideas?' And I was like, 'Well, yes, I do!'"
Kinney is well-known in The Walking Dead universe as a singer and songwriter. She performed several songs during her time on The Walking Dead, and those are some of the fans' favorite moments and scenes of Kinney's time on the series.
If you've been out of the loop for all things Walking Dead, you'll be surprised to learn that Kinney, who starred as Beth Greene for the first five seasons of the series, will be returning to star alongside Lauren Cohan, who plays Beth's sister Maggie, in Dead City season 3 episode 6, which airs this weekend. It's shocking for a lot of fans because Beth suffered one of the most tragic deaths in the history of the franchise way back in 2014.
So, how are they bringing Beth back in a series that is set at least six years after the events of The Walking Dead finale? Well, it's pretty simple. We're getting an alternate history episode that reveals what life would have been like for Maggie had the outbreak not happened. As fate would have it, Maggie is now living in Manhattan, and Beth lives there, too.
We still don't know exactly what to expect, but we did see a brief teaser for the episode, which included the first official footage of Beth and Maggie. In the teaser, Beth meets Maggie in the park with some hot chocolates or coffees, and she has her guitar in a case across her back.
After all this time, we're going to see Beth and Maggie back together again.
I hope this heals a lot of wounds for fans of the series. As mentioned, Beth's death is one of the most insane and heartbreaking sequences in the show's history, and that's saying something. This show is full of heartbreaking deaths. Almost every major character dies, and unfortunately, Beth was not spared.
Beth died in The Walking Dead season 5 episode 8, "Coda." After Rick and Daryl and the gang organized a hostage swap with Dawn Learner's group to get Beth back, Beth stabbed Dawn after she refused to let Noah (Tyler James Williams) go. Instinctively, Dawn shot Beth in the head, and Daryl charged forward and killed Dawn.
Things almost blew up after that, but the groups called things off and walked away before more people were killed. Daryl carried Beth's body out of the hospital in one of the saddest scenes in the show's history.
