The Walking Dead began as a simple comic book series, a dark story of survival in a world overrun by the undead. And then AMC decided to bring it to life on television, turning it into a sprawling, edge-of-your-seat franchise that not only captivated millions of viewers worldwide but also expanded into multiple thrilling spinoffs.
Of course, not all spinoffs have landed perfectly for every fan. Some stories resonated more than others, and certain characters or plotlines sparked debate and divided opinions. Yet even with the highs and lows, each addition to the franchise has added depth to the ever-expanding universe, exploring new locations, introducing complex characters, and revealing layers of the post-apocalyptic world we hadn’t seen before.
Unfortunately, there's been quite a slowdown in new content lately. There are currently only two ongoing Walking Dead spinoffs. One being The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, and the other The Walking Dead: Dead City. While there have been discussions about expanding the universe further, including potential new series, nothing has been officially confirmed yet. There's More Tales From the Walking Dead Universe, but that spinoff might have been quietly canceled. That said, fans have had to put all their focus on these two existing shows for now.
Daryl Dixon recently wrapped filming on its fourth and final season and is confirmed to return next year. Dead City, on the other hand, is currently in its third season and is still being filmed in Massachusetts. But there might be a reason for fans to get excited about this particular spinoff soon. We could potentially be just a month away from a major announcement.
Dead City season 3 might wrap production in January 2026

This could potentially be big news headed our way! Initially, we thought that production might wrap on Dead City season 3 sometime in December of this year. Why did we think this? Well, we were basing this season's production timeline on previous seasons.
It took three months and five days for the cast and crew to film the first season, and three months and seven days for them to shoot the second installment. The cameras started rolling on Dead City season 3 on Sept. 8, 2025. If season 3 were to follow a similar production schedule to seasons 1 and 2, that would put the end of filming right around mid-December 2025.
However, we learned from series star Jeffrey Dean Morgan that production won't actually be completed until after the holiday period. He shared these juicy deets via his X page. Below, we shared his exact response to a fan who asked about how long filming would last on Dead City season 3.
"We almost halfway thru a killer season. So it’s going fast… but we won’t finish until after holidays. Big stuff a coming."
That post is dated Nov. 3. On Nov. 23, Morgan then responded to another fan on X who assumed he would have time off from work for the holidays. He responded by clarifying his actual work schedule. He told the fan that he was given Thanksgiving off, but would be back on set until just before Christmas, with additional work planned in January.
"It’s not the holidays. I have thanksgiving day off. Then back until right before Xmas. Then some stuff in January. What? You think I’m like done from now until January?! Christ. I WISH. Doesn’t work that way. At all unfortunately."
So, based on Morgan’s comments, it looks like Dead City season 3 might not actually wrap production until at least January 2026. If the cameras do actually stop rolling at the top of next year, we'll likely begin seeing those social media posts rolling in from the cast to commemorate the end of filming. That's usually the telltale sign that a season has wrapped. Don't worry! We'll get back to you once we have confirmation that filming has officially finished.
Dead City season 3 sees a change in showrunner, with franchise veteran Seth Hoffman taking over from Eli Jorné, who led the first two seasons. Morgan and Lauren Cohan reprise their respective roles as Negan and Maggie, with the story picking up after the season 2 finale.
In the third season, these two iconic characters decide to put aside their past conflicts and work together to establish Manhattan’s first thriving post-apocalyptic community since the zombie apocalypse. But as unrest begins to spread through the city, they’ll have to confront their past and decide if they’ve truly learned from it or if it will spell doom for everyone. Although not confirmed, the third installment is also expected to comprise eight episodes.
