Deadline reports that actor Spenser Granese has joined the cast of A24's new project, Marty Supreme. The story is loosely inspired by 1950's professional ping pong player Marty Reisman but is a fictionalized story, not a biopic.
Marty Supreme is created and directed by Josh Safdie known for his work on Good Time (2017) and Uncut Gems (2019). He co-wrote the story with Ronald Bronstein, who is a frequent collaborator of the Safdie brothers. Deadline has reported that the budget for the film is $70 million, making it A24's most expensive project, surpassing the 2024 Civil War budget of $50 million.
Details about the characters and the story's plot have been kept under wraps. Marty Reisman was an unconventional in the sport of ping pong and won two U.S. Men's Singles Championships in 1958 and 1960. He is remembered as one of table tennis' great players of the era.
Timothée Chalamet co-produces the film with Safdie, Bronstein, Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, and A24. He also stars as the titular character. He is joined by Fran Dresher, who pays Marty's mother and Gwyneth Paltrow, musician Tyler, the Creator, Odessa A'zion, actor/magician Penn Jillette, Kevin O'Leary, Abel Ferrara, and Granese.
Filming for Marty Supreme began in New York City in Sept. 2024.
