When horror fans think of underrated genre classics, one title that often gets overlooked is The Mist, the 2007 film directed by Frank Darabont and adapted from a Stephen King novella. On the surface, it’s a tense, claustrophobic monster movie about a small Maine town enveloped in a supernatural fog filled with deadly creatures. But beneath the surface, it’s a psychological exploration of fear, human behavior, and survival under extreme conditions.

What makes the film especially fascinating in retrospect, however, is its cast. The Mist brought together three actors who would later become iconic figures on AMC’s The Walking Dead, making the film an unexpected precursor to one of television’s most influential zombie dramas.

The Mist centers around the residents of Bridgton, Maine, who find themselves trapped inside a local grocery store when a thick, mysterious mist rolls in, hiding deadly, otherworldly creatures. At the center of the movie is desperate father David Drayton (Thomas Jane), who is determined to protect his young son, Billy (Nathan Gamble), as the situation spirals out of control.

Andrea (Laurie Holden) - The Walking Dead season 3 | Gene Page/AMC

Inside the supermarket, David encounters a mix of terrified townspeople, each grappling with panic, distrust, and the slow erosion of social norms. Among them is Amanda Dumfries, a schoolteacher portrayed by Laurie Holden. Her performance in the film is understated but emotionally grounded, conveying both fear and compassion as she navigates the chaos.

A few years later, Holden would take on the role of Andrea in The Walking Dead. This character would evolve from a conflicted, sometimes hesitant survivor to a hardened, determined figure.

Dale (Jeffrey DeMunn) - The Walking Dead season 2 | Gene Page/AMC

Another key Walking Dead actor who makes a memorable appearance in this film is Jeffrey DeMunn, who played Dan Miller, a frightened local trying to warn others about the danger lurking outside. He ends up teaming up with David and Amanda as they navigate the increasingly tense and dangerous situation. They work together to protect themselves and the other trapped townspeople from both the monstrous creatures in the mist and the panic that threatens to tear the group apart.

Walking Dead fans will instantly recognize DeMunn for the same calm, measured presence he would later bring to his role as Dale Horvath on the hit zombie series. Dale was basically the moral compass of Rick's group in The Walking Dead, consistently advocating for reason, compassion, and ethical behavior even when others were driven by fear or revenge.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 3
Melissa McBride as Carol Peletier - The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 3 | Manuel Fernandez-Valdes/AMC

Last but not least is Melissa McBride, who makes a smaller appearance in The Mist as a background character. She played a worried mother concerned for her children. She appears in a brief scene at the beginning of the film, and we don't see her again until the very end.

In The Walking Dead, McBride would play Carol Peletier, one of the series’ most compelling and transformative characters. Starting as a timid, abused woman, Carol eventually evolves into a formidable, strategic survivor, capable of making tough decisions and taking decisive action when the situation demands it.

But besides Jane, Gamble, Holden, DeMunn, and McBride, The Mist cast includes Toby Jones, Marcia Gay Harden, Andre Braugher, Frances Sternhagen, William Sadler, Sam Witwer, Laurie Fortier, and many others.

As mentioned earlier, Frank Darabont directed The Mist. He also wrote the screenplay for the movie. If you weren't aware, Darabont served as showrunner and executive producer for The Walking Dead's first season. This is likely the reason why Holden, DeMunn, and McBride all became main cast members on the zombie series.

Since Darabont had previously worked with these talented actors, he probably had the pull to bring them onto The Walking Dead. Whatever the reason, their castings were a perfect fit. I couldn't imagine any other actors inhabiting these roles.

The Mist is available to stream for free on The Roku Channel.
