Ever since the first season of The Walking Dead was released in 2010, fans have come to expect yearly releases in the beloved zombie franchise. Even after the main series came to an end in 2022, multiple spin-off shows starring beloved characters such as Maggie, Negan, Daryl Dixon, and Carol have kept the saga's legacy alive. Unfortunately, this is the first time in over a decade that audiences don't know what to expect from this ruthless post-apocalyptic world moving forward.
The only confirmed project so far is The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 4, which will be released in 2027 and will act as the series' final chapter. From that point onward, the future remains completely uncertain, and there's no telling what could happen next. After all, The Walking Dead: Dead City hasn't been renewed for a fourth season yet, even though its open ending suggests there will be more Maggie and Negan stories to come.
To make matters more complicated, there has been no news about a possible renewal for Tales of the Walking Dead, with fans assuming the spin-off has simply been cancelled. And since that long-awaited reunion project hasn't been greenlit yet, it remains unclear when we are going to see most of these post-apocalyptic survivors next.
On the bright side, Maggie Greene has returned to the world of The Walking Dead in a completely different project than the live-action adaptations.
Maggie returns to The Walking Dead franchise as a playable character in Aftermath
The Walking Dead: Aftermath is a free-to-play roguelite that pits players against hordes of zombies across well-known locations seen in The Walking Dead show. When the game was initially released, it featured multiple iconic playable characters like Rick, Carl, and Michonne. Since launch day, other survivors have been added to the mix, including Negan and Daryl. Now, it's finally time for Maggie to shine.

On Sep. 24, 2026, Maggie was added as a playable character in The Walking Dead: Aftermath. As is the case with most characters, she needs to be unlocked via the Recruitment Radio Tower (which costs gems) or through Maggie's Marksman Target challenge, which is basically a fancy lottery game.
In our review of The Walking Dead: Aftermath, we gave the game a C+ rating. While it has highly addictive gameplay mechanics and features no shortage of iconic locations from the show, its microtransactions are invasive, and there is no way to endlessly play the game without spending money or waiting hours to recharge energy bars.
Fortunately, since The Walking Dead: Aftermath is a free-to-play game, there's no reason for fans of the franchise not to try it. Besides, developer Swift Games has added new game modes and features since the game's release, meaning there's even more content for players to enjoy.
With a bit of luck, it won't be long now before AMC reveals when we will get to see Lauren Cohan return as Maggie on the small screen. In the meantime, it never hurts to play as her in a The Walking Dead video game. But if mobile titles aren't exactly your cup of tea, then there's also another recent release called The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival that features arcade-like beat-em-up combat mechanics and is available on PC and all major consoles.
