Additionally, AMC adapted these stories into an acclaimed TV show that ran for eleven seasons before multiple spin-off shows took its place and kept the legacy alive. However, there's one type of media where the franchise hasn't had the chance to shine just yet: video games.
Telltale's The Walking Dead was met with critical and commercial acclaim by putting video game players at the wheel and forcing them to make difficult choices. But aside from this heartbreaking series, no other title has managed to replicate the magic of the source material and the TV show. However, a new contender is finally here, and it is looking to capture lightning in a bottle by featuring a unique visual style and multiple playable characters.
The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival is out now
It's time to grab our barbed-wired bats, magnums, and katanas, because The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival is out now on all platforms. The latest title developed by Odaclick Game Studio and published by Trailmark Games puts players in the middle of the action with a single-player campaign spanning 12 different levels.
The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival features arcade-like beat-em-up combat mechanics along with retro graphics that give it a unique identity. Moreover, the game has three playable characters from the start in the form of Rick Grimes, Michonne, and Daryl Dixon. Better yet, Negan can also be unlocked when completing the main campaign.
The game's campaign takes players through familiar locations and pits them against iconic bosses such as Winslow, the Well Walker, Negan, and more. Along the way, we'll unravel a story that acts as a reimagining of the All-Out War storyline, as revealed by Streets of Survival's official synopsis:
"Inspired by the All-Out War storyline from AMC's The Walking Dead, Streets of Survival delivers an action-packed, single-player campaign pitting players against the merciless Saviors and hordes of the undead. Play as Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon, and Michonne, as well as the unlockable and vicious Negan to battle across classic environments from The Walking Dead such as the Sanctuary, Hilltop, Alexandria, and more."
The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival currently holds 86% positive reviews on Steam and a 3.94 rating out of 5 in the PlayStation Store. The game's reception on Metacritic has been lukewarm, with a 63% approval score based on five reviews. The general consensus is that the game features beautiful graphics and surprising RPG elements that add an extra layer to the gameplay. However, movement is criticized for being a little stiff, and combat can become repetitive due to the characters' limited moveset.
While The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival wasn't exactly met with rave reviews, it currently has a better reception than most other TWD games, except for Telltale's iconic series. As such, it could be a fun way for fans of the franchise to spend more time in the ruthless world Robert Kirkman created all the way back in 2003.
