The Walking Dead is an iconic franchise that has completely taken over comic books and television, but it has yet to leave a huge mark in the video game industry.

Fans still long for an open-world survival game developed for modern consoles and starring the likes of Rick Grimes, Maggie, or Daryl Dixon. Fortunately, there's one specific title set in this post-apocalyptic world that made waves for all the right reasons when it was released back in 2012, and it is Telltale's The Walking Dead.

For the first time in the franchise's history, we didn't just watch how survivors made hard choices to stay alive. Instead, we were the ones who had to decide what would happen next. A single wrong turn is all that's needed for an iconic character in the game to bite the dust, and it's much easier to shed tears when you are the one stuck in the middle of an unforgiving world that takes far more than it offers. A decade later, Telltale's The Walking Dead still packs quite a punch. Better yet: If you haven't experienced this story for yourself yet, there will be a way to do so for free.

Lenovo Legion Gaming will give free key vouchers for Telltale's The Walking Dead Season 1

On Sept. 9, 2026, at 12 p.m. ET, Lenovo Legion Gaming will be giving away free key vouchers to download the first chapter of Telltale's The Walking Dead on Steam. There is no time limit to claim a key, but there are a limited number of them, meaning only the first participants in the queue will be able to obtain the game.

In order to redeem a voucher, you'll need to have valid accounts for Lenovo's Legion Gaming Community, Steam, and Twitch. When the giveaway begins, you'll be able to visit the official The Walking Dead key drops page and click the Gleam widget to enter a virtual queue. After a brief wait, you'll need to "complete the Steam and Twitch account confirmation steps in Gleam" and also link the Legion Gaming Community account. When all steps are completed, the key voucher will appear, which can be exchanged at Gamesplanet for a Steam key.

It's worth pointing out that the key gives players access to the first of four seasons of The Walking Dead, developed by Telltale. Furthermore, there is also a spin-off title called The Walking Dead: Michonne and a special episode titled 400 Days that bridges the events between season 1 and season 2. But even if the giveaway doesn't give you access to the whole series, it can be a nice starting point.

"The Walking Dead is a five-part game series set in the same universe as Robert Kirkman’s award-winning comic book series. Play as Lee Everett, a convicted criminal, who has been given a second chance at life in a world devastated by the undead. With corpses returning to life and survivors stopping at nothing to maintain their own safety, protecting an orphaned girl named Clementine may offer him redemption in an apocalyptic world."

September will also see the arrival of a new The Walking Dead game titled Streets of Survival, which is an arcade beat 'em up adventure with a free demo on Steam that has gathered positive reviews. Furthermore, a mobile game called The Walking Dead: Aftermath hit mobile devices back in July. Slowly but surely, the saga has been taking over the video game world, so it wouldn't be surprising to learn that there are even more titles in development.

Telltale's The Walking Dead is one of those mesmerizing (but cruel) adventures that every player should experience at least once in their lives, so if you haven't done so already, now is the perfect time to see what the excitement is all about.
