The Walking Dead franchise has lived on in many ways after the conclusion of the original series. One of the most acclaimed ways in which it has managed to do that is spinoff series The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. Starring Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride, the show is one of three spinoffs commissioned ahead of TWD's ending, focusing on beloved characters from the original show's tenure in more intimate, character-focused stories. This one places the spotlight on Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier as they enter a new chapter of the post-apocalyptic world outside of the US.
Although the first season of Daryl Dixon was solely about Daryl's adventures in France, Carol returned to screens in the finale, making her way to Europe in search of her best friend. She then reunited with him midway through the second season, with the third now set to take them into London and, eventually, Spain - where the upcoming season will mostly be set.
There is a lot of anticipation for the new season, and not just because we're catching up with Daryl and Carol. There are some surprising, new faces in the line-up, and now we know more about two of them.
New Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon teaser introduces us to Justina and Roberto
The relatively new webseries Behind the Dead has presented the TWD Universe with a wonderful new opportunity to cross over the fanbases and audiences of spinoffs Dead City and Daryl Dixon. Reflecting on the former's most recent season while previewing the upcoming season of the latter, the show gives fans a look behind-the-scenes on both projects, gifting them with a glimpse into the production side of things.
On the Daryl Dixon side of things, the most recent Behind the Dead installment introduces us to the new characters we'll meet in the upcoming third season. Those new characters are Justina (Candela Saitta) and Roberto (Hugo Arbués) and we get a glimpse of them in action in the clip, as well as a chance to get to know the actors bringing them to life.
The preview reveals that Justina and Roberto will play a big role in Daryl Dixon season 3. As showrunner David Zabel highlights, love in the apocalypse will be a big theme this season and it will be explored through the pair's relationship. They are in love, which is a very hopeful thing to find after the undead have started walking the earth, but it also comes with great risk: Their love is a forbidden one and they technically aren't allowed to be together. It's giving Romeo and Juliet... but in the apocalypse.
This will ultimately impact much of Daryl and Carol's journey this season. Carol, seemingly moved by their love and the plight of their situation, will attempt to find a way to help them. Daryl, on the other hand, will be ready to move on as they continue their journey back home to the US. And that might result in some conflict between the two best friends, particularly because we know that Carol will be embarking on a romance of her own this season with Antonio.
The official season 3 trailer showed us that this season is going to dive into the question behind why they are surviving. It's all about that hope to start living again, and that hope appears to be what's driving Carol this time around. As the Spanish region she and Daryl find themselves in are under attack, it's up to them to stop it. Although they are once again fighting another fight that isn't their own, they are the only ones who can do anything about it. With their own desire to start living again, and Justina and Roberto's love story, on the line, we're going to find out just how far they are willing to go to live again.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 3 premieres on AMC and AMC+ on September 7.
