When most fans think of the best characters from The Walking Dead, Daryl Dixon has to be on the shortlist. Playing such an iconic character as Norman Reedus has for the last two decades makes it hard to escape that character's shadow.
In an interview with Lifestyle Asia, Reedus revealed the one thing that's been constant in his life since he started playing Daryl Dixon in The Walking Dead more than 15 years ago.
"Oh yeah. I mean, especially this spin-off. I mean, first off, people call me 'Daryl' all day long, you know. Cops, firemen, everybody calls me 'Daryl,'" Reedus said.
Of course, it's not unique to Reedus to have an experience like this. I'm sure Andrew Lincoln gets called "Rick Grimes," Daniel Radcliffe gets called "Harry Potter," and Kit Harington gets called "Jon Snow" in everyday life. It's just par for the course of getting famous on the biggest show or movie in the world at one point in time or another.
Even writing his name in stories, I often type "Daryl" and have to backspace and type "Reedus" or "Norman Reedus." He just is Daryl Dixon, you know?
More seriously, Reedus answered the question and revealed just how Daryl, the character, has bled into his personal life, outside of getting called Daryl every time he steps outside his house.
"But as far as into my own life, I mean, you play a character that long, it really becomes a part of your everyday life. Not just the name, but things that you’re going through in real life sort of become storylines and things you’re hoping to find in the future somehow bleed their way into what you’re doing."
He also discussed that, now as a producer, he's able to plant little seeds that turn into stories down the line from things that he's experienced in life or things Daryl should go through.
This is such interesting perspective. Reedus is always as honest as they come in these kinds of interviews, but he does feel like more of a private kind of star. He doesn't always spill all the details like some major TV and movie stars have been known to do.
After Reedus returned from Hong Kong Comic Con, he also posted an emotional message on Instagram saying goodbye to Daryl Dixon ahead of the season 4 premiere later this year. He also shared a few behind-the-scenes pictures from his final day on set.
I'm sure this will not be the last we hear from Reedus, though! There's a good chance we'll see him at San Diego Comic-Con in July and on the press tour for Daryl Dixon season 4 later this year.
