The end of the first season featured the return of Carol to the storyline as she begins her search for Daryl, who, after promising to return to the Commonwealth within a week, never arrives. Her story will be further explored in season 2, The Book of Carol.

Talking with Entertainment Weekly, McBride discusses Carol's headspace as she begins her new journey. She states that Carol will differ from the woman viewers know from the main series.

"She is determined. But it’s a different type of fearlessness that’s driven by her determination to find her friend — and also by the headspace that we find Carol in, which will be revealed."
